My buddy is in contact with the stihl tech manager for Atlantic Canada. They’re trying to get to the bottom of the problem so when they figure it out I’ll post what happened. It’s been pretty cold up there, usually below -30°C but all the other saws are working fine.
The gas would be what they got from the camp so as for age I have no idea. My buddy Adam runs a Amsoil Saber at 40:1 and his 461 runs fine but not the 500i. As for the other guys I have no idea what they would be running for oil or ratio but I would assume 50:1. Like I said I’m not up there...
It could possibly be a fuel issues but something specific to the 500i. I text him what Huskihl had written so he’s going to swap out the filter and see if it helps. He did just say that they are running the same fuel and mix in a 461, 462 and a 372 and all 3 are running fine. They are only...
Hey guys I’m hoping someone can give me some insight into what may be happening.
I have a friend of mine who is working in northern Ontario at the moment, extremely cold weather and the trees are loaded with snow. They have 6 500i’s on the program and none are running at the moment. 5 of...
I’ve broken one 661 cover but to be honest I should have changed my chip deflector long before I broke the cover.
What I find weird is all the guys talk about how often they derail the chain on the 500i, an excessive amount resulting in smashing these covers. At first I assumed operator...
I'm sure some crafty person could get something to work. The only possible issue I see with that is putting more material inside a cover that’s already too narrow would make it harder to clear the wood chips, or at least that’s how I see it in my head. If the WCS is strong and holds up to the...
I can’t comment on the 500i personally as I don’t own one but we have 10 guys on our project right now running them and in the last 2 months there have been 6 broken clutch covers and one broken gas tank (derailed the chained, broke through the clutch cover and gas tank). It’s the only...
Well I didn’t realize this would stir up like this or I wouldn’t have even mentioned it. Or the fact that people would question if I was telling the truth or not. So to appease people I asked my wife to try and take a pic of the piston for me and this is what she got.
As for the cylinder...
Like I stated earlier I’ll send some when I get home but right now I’m nearly 10hrs away on a falling project so I’m not exactly sure when I’ll be back. It might not be until the Christmas break if they keep adding blocks.
I was super happy with the saw. It was my Tree Monkey 462 and ran fantastic. I ended up stripping out the spark plug hole which is why I tore it apart and found the cracked piston and jug. Up until that point it ran strong and was my go to saw for smaller wood or anytime I had long hikes to...
Depends on what you consider high hour. I haven’t had it checked but I would guess it has 1500+ for sure. It’s had a hard life, I used it falling on the fires and doing beetle kill among other things so that’s never easy on them. Lived it’s life running 40:1 Saber.
I have a 462 with both a cracked piston and cylinder. I know guys have been asking for pics of broken pistons so I’ll grab a couple and post them when I get home in a couple of days.
