Another stupid "what saw should I buy" thread

I didn't but I will go check it, I definitely need one. It's hanging on the saw by the grace of hope, wishes, and oversized washers right now. ;)

So as an update on this.... The 565 has been through a bunch of tanks of gas and couple bar flips. It has a chip on the handle and it's all dirty... now it looks like a saw. These days I take my Dolmar 6400 and the Husky into the woods, and leave the Echo behind. I've been using the Husky...

As kids we never said we were cold inside, because our dad would always apply his favorite remedy (send us straight outside to split wood). He never forgot to ask if we were still cold when we came back in, either. ;)

Yeah, I bought the 565 from Gentleman. I was a bit nervous about the dodgy looking paypal process, but there's a lot of posts here from satisfied customers, so that got me through it. Saw was shipped right away, was as advertised and undamaged. 565 + shipping + 28" B&C was $840, which is the...

Hey, that 565 for $740 hits my price point and my 70cc displacement target. I may well go with that. :)

I chewed on it a while, and I think I'm keeping the Dolmar for occasional use, and I'll get a Husky for my daily driver. I'm wiffling around the 60-70cc huskies still. Looks Bartlett is selling the 562 XP with a 24" bar for $730 with free shipping ... which makes it attractive compared to the...

Man, that is tempting at that price. On the other hand, I'm sinking $120 into a saw that parts aren't ever going to be made for again. Next time I need a part, what is that going to look like? I hate to say it since they're such great saws, but I'm looking to get away from Dolmar before the...

Yeah, one of the reasons I bought it. At the time, I had to talk myself out of not putting the new jug on before I even ran it :D

I was in love with the 6400 for a long time. She still runs strong and always starts on the second pull once you know her preferences. My main complaint right now is that the muffler assembly is broken and only has a couple remaining screw-holes. The new part is $250, and I would rather drop...

Another stupid "what saw should I buy" thread

I'm a firewood cutter who gets his own trees. I don't sell any wood. That translates to around 4-5 cords a year. I've been running a Dolmar 6400 and a little Echo limbing saw for... 8 or 9 years now. It's time to retire the Dolmar. The parts are outrageous, and getting harder to find. The Echo...

What octane is best, and why

I get along fine with whatever is cheapest at the pump. If you're putting the saw up for storage, break out the synthetics or the fancy no-ethanol stuff. For a saw that actually gets used regularly, whatever's cheap works. Tune the saw for what you burn in it.

Advice on a new chain grinder

My only complaint with my Diamond Wheel cbn is that it's a little too coarse. They will do a wheel for you in any grit you want, though. If I was grinding commercially, I'd 100% want CBN. Less heat, consistent height and shape on the wheel. That alone is impressive if you want consistent...

Dumb things your friends do with saws

I actually do that to myself semi-regularly, not sure how. I've gotten pretty good at flipping them back, though it's honestly kind of hard to visualize how it works without having a chain in my hands.

I looked for an hour, and I couldn't find the end. I'll try again tomorrow.

    depth guage tool

.025" on a new chain is very different than .025" on a chain with short teeth. Progressive height adjustment is the answer to that.
