    What's on your bench?

For a 32, I’ve always thought the black mounts were a little… Flaccid. Falling it does okay, it’s bucking using the dogs and moving the tip around limbing where I can really feel the wiggle and the rear handle moving and almost bottoming out on the mount with my somewhat ham-fisted approach when...

    What's on your bench?

Not long after @davidwyby posted a thread about 1128 series Stihl AV mounts, my 046 started buzzing my hands more than normal. The annular mount had cracked. So I swapped it for the stiffer one, and did the one on my 460 at the same time.

    Absurdities on the YT

I met Adam a couple of years back. He’s a really nice guy, and a very good machinist. Youtube can be a good resource for information & entertainment… If you have a fair basic understanding to understand what’s good and what’s not. It was much more useful 10 years ago. As with many events in...

    HELP! Tractor size

So, I’m several years out of the farm tractor game. And I’m going to warn you that this is a long post. And some of this is apples to oranges, but the same principles apply. Brand are forks and spoons. I’m not brand loyal, but I would want something I know I can get parts for 20-30 years from...

90cc class saws which one is the current king of the class?

I think it depends on what you want to do with it. I don’t think anything is ever going to top a 395 below 100cc for running a 36”+ bar. Stock 661s are kinda floppy and lazy, but a huge improvement over the round top 660s in terms of usable power. I ran a stock 592 last fall because I didn’t...

Clearing trees and brush - exc or dozer?

Obviously YMMV, all the other disclaimers, but I’m going to have to disagree. A mulcher is an awesome tool, but for stuff the size and density of what I’m seeing in David’s pictures, I think clearing/grubbing with an excavator is the way to go, followed potentially by an herbicide treatment...

STIHL The Official Stihl Chainsaws Thread

I really doubt a 462 is going to put away an 046 dependent on bar length. The 046, especially the early ones that came from the factory with the D-shaped combustion chamber and dual port cover from the factory, ran better than the later ones and the MS 460. With a 20-25” bar a 462 should have a...

    Saw suggestions

I think for most homeowners battery is the way to go for anything that would have previously used mix gas. Milwaukee, Makita & Dewalt all make them. Stihl & Husqvarna too. If it has to be gas, it’s hard to beat the value Echo beings to the table.

    Mini Excavator grapple

It’s been a minute since I’ve looked at any of their literature, so it’s probably safe to say I misspelled it. Yeah, that’s kinda the rub with any excavator that’s either reduced tail swing or weighs less than 30,000 pounds. It doesn’t take too much to make it unbalanced enough to offset the...

    Mini Excavator grapple

I don’t have any direct experience, but Robotech is kinda the standard for excavator grapples. AMI manufactures a long list of excavator attachments but are mostly known for their XMOR buckets. I would not hesitate to purchase one. I’ve never been let down by something Werk-Brau has...

What are your thoughts? Comparable to a 50cc gas saw?

Decomp - Use It or Lose It?

I don’t use them, but I won’t plug them unless they leak. And then, it’s a toss-up if I plug it or not. If there’s a valve in stock, I’ll pick it up and install it. If not, I’ll put a bolt in. I start my saws with rear handle between my legs and the chain brake on. I hate bending over to start...

    Welding helmets, costs vs longevity?

The best view I’ve had out of a welding hood was/is a shade 9 gold glass lens. I don’t really want a huge view, so I go with the 2x4.25, right now I go with the Phillips Safety ones-in an old school (made in the 1990s) fixed-front Fibre Metal tigerhood I got from my dad. The batteries don’t die...

    Gutting the hinge discussion

If I want more directional control I’ll leave the posts fatter. Sometimes front to back is just as helpful as side-to-side width. If I’m worried about barberchair I’ll leave the posts smaller so there’s less wood to pull. Dead Ash trees are brutal. I may be completely backwards with this line...

    Gutting the hinge discussion

I follow. When I’m thinking about gutting the hinge I’m more in the leaving somewhere between 10-25% as posts on the outside and really cutting all of what’s in the middle.
