Been cleaning on this cylinder for a while and it looks better, but not pretty. You can't feel any of the lines with a dental pick and a ring looks really good in it. What do you think? Use it?

With a bit more cleanup on some spots, maybe. The lines may not fully come out but there looks to be some transfer remaining in the first and third pic. There’s a bit of plating loss at the bottom, too (not sure if that would affect anything there).

Only for personal saw for me.

yeah, saw the plating but at the bottom shouldn't bother any thing. what transfer there is left will come off it in the first minute of run I would think.

I'm doing some practice port work on it and will drop a hyway piston in it. If I'm not happy with it, I ordered a meteor cylinder and piston that I will change to.

2172, everything down low looked and felt fine, I'll vac it and check the seals, probably replace them anyway.

If it has some hours on it the bearings are crispy...trust me. I maintain quite a few of these and they are hard on bearings.

Great saws otherwise and the ones I take care of cut a chit load of timber. Loggers here love them.

I'm probably going to keep this because it doesn't pretty much, so it will get mild use and I can go back in if needed. I only remember having one bad bearing out of about 10 372s? Change them if I need to split the case but they haven't been a problem.

Actually the smallest bit of aluminum transfer will bind the piston up and seize. Most of the dark lines appear to have fresh honing marks through them so you should be ok there. The dark lines you cannot feel are ok, just make sure there isn't any transfer left.

Didn't know that, I figured a minimal amount would scrap clean with the new rings?

I agree with chainsaw jim that you need to get ALL the transfer off before running it. The scratches won't really hurt anything.

Good to know, first one I rebuilt was a 455 ranch about ten years ago and I didn't hardly clean it up. Saw ran for three firewood seasons before crapping out from junk rings.
I have a new Meteor piston and cylinder for it, but would like to try out some of my port work on this one first.
