Will a 351 piston work on a 353 cylinder?

I have a 353 coming to me with suspect scoring. I have a decent genuine 351 piston kit. Will it work? While I'm there I was going to clean up and port the transfers and open out the exhaust port and muffler a tad. Anything else to do? If I remember correctly the timing can be advanced. I'm not after anything major, just little gains here and there.

Thanks in advance guys [emoji106]

My rule of thumb. Always buy the piston, rings, and the cylinder together as a P/C kit and replace them both at the same time. That works for me.

The Duke at sawsalvage.com has nice aftermarket pistons for the 353 for $21.00. Pretty hard to beat and much better quality than Highway.

Do a base gasket delete and muffler mod. Not sure about a 353 but if you put a 346ne cylinder on it bgd will be close to .020. Sometimes you can find 346ne p/c kits for $100 and it’s well worth it.

Thanks guys.

Over here in the UK it's impossible to find anything 346xp that is decent or original or cheap. A kit is nearly £200.

I have the 351 cylinder and piston, original and in good condition. I have a 545 MK2 and 550xp mk2. I just wanted something a tad lighter for in a tree when the 200t runs out of puff. I'll do some muffler, gasket, port and timing work on the 351 top end and see what I can get out of it with a 15" bar.

That an interesting looking 351 mate.

Clutch side handle overlay I've not seen before.
And the clutch cover is off a later one too.
Tag defo days 351?

Another Adam.

They continued to sell and update a lot of saws in the UK and in Asia that were nixed in our countries. That could explain the differences.

Nope. It's a 346xpg. Has a 353 cylinder on it and a 346xp clutch cover. It's all genuine and a few new parts like the muffler. But the piston is scored to hell. The recoil is off an older 346xp.

But.. I have a 351 piston kit sitting in a box to go on it, unless I can find a 346xp kit somehow.

There you go, a bit of everything on this one.

Nice hearing from you, from another Adam [emoji106]

Sorry bro, should have reread from top.
Can't just get a 353 Meteor piston in the UK?
I built one with a HyWay popup, but wouldn't bother again. Circlips, rings all dicey, too much trouble after changing over to OEM and caber. Ran like the wind, but ended up too spendy.

I literally can't find a meteor, hyway etc 353 here. The genuine ones are £100 ish. I can't warrant that atm.

I'll figure something out [emoji3526]

Is it a g model? In Canada the 353 was available with heated handles, only seen a few, 351 is uncommon around here.

So I have thrown it all back together, 351 Mahle cylinder, 346xpg case handles and the likes. I have opened up the muffler and deleted the cylinder gasket. It's nice for what it is.
