So, on these saws, if you increase transfer area should you always expect to need extra blowdown?
In general, yes. Every saw needs extra Blowdown if the transfer are is increased. That’s why quads generally have transfers in the 125-130 range and duals in the 118-125 range.

The beauty of a quad is that one gets extra area and still maintains velocity.

I’m not sure which pin sprocket the saw had on it.

Was that a 7 or 8 pin?

8 pin 3/8 round file

My saws run 7 pin. (Unless it was changed).

Looked like Doc had an 8 pin on it.

Maybe Dan can check for us. I remember seeing 8 pin.

I'll know when I put a bar on it Upstate NY.

That beast needs a 8 pin on a bar that size huh. 9 would probably be easy for it too, but hard on the clutch for work.

We will leave the 7 pin, go with 36" full comp, and drop rakers if we want!

It seemed to cut pretty fast with a 7 pin, and I like torque.

The 7 pin could explain why it was running strong. Never lost any power even when I leaned on it.

Prefer a 7 pin for work unless it’s my ported 395. Run a 32” 8 pin setup on it currently. 8 pin keeps it loaded a bit better on 28” and 32” ....36” and up I would drop to a 7 pin to be easier on clutch.
