So, maybe this ain't a popular opinion here, and I'm alright with that.
I'm starting this thread because i see some words getting thrown around that I think we'd do better to eliminate from our vocabulary. I figured I'd start my own thread rather than stand on a soap-box.
So, mainly the words that I've been seeing are "gay" and "ghey" used to denote when something is lame or bad or dumb. Well, I personally think that that's inappropriate. And, frankly, hateful. I grew up in the Midwest. "Gay" got used every day in my high school the way it gets used here. I'm guilty of using it myself. But after high school someone took me aside and explained to me what I'm trying to say here. That "gay" isn't a bad thing. It's not wrong to be gay, and using "gay" in language to mean the same thing as "$hitty" is just another instance of putting down someone else who is different.
Now, maybe you use this word, and maybe you honestly, truly don't think less of gay folks. That's probably where I was at when I used it in high school. One of my aunts is gay. She's been an incredible figure in my life. I don't now and didn't then mean any harm gay people. I used the word without realizing that it is hurtful to them. And it is. Maybe not every gay person is bothered by it, but some are, and that's enough for me to stop using it. Hopefully for you too.
I know that political correctness fit the sake of political correctness isn't popular around here, and that's fine. To me, this isn't about that. It's about not using language that completely unnecessarily degrades others. You don't actually think it's homosexual that your truck wouldn't start. Just say it's dumb and get to fixing it. Saying it's "gay" just drives a wedge between people. It makes look like a bigot and disrespectful. Would you walk around saying "that's so black" or "that's so Latino". No, because that's out of line. It's derogatory, just like saying "that's so gay".
I'm not gonna address it in depth right now, but calling people "pussy", or saying something is "pussy" would be another one I think we can eliminate.
So, if anyone wants to chime in, I'd love to hear what people think. Personally, i think that, as a community, we'll be better off if we strive to be respectful of all people with our language.
Thanks for reading, and have yourself a good one.
