Looking at buying a rifle so some day I can go out west mule deer hunting. I’am left handed so that makes it a little harder to find guns. I have a remington 760 pump already in 30-06 with lots of brass. So I would like to stick with a 30-06. Have any of you guys had a tikka?

Can’t go wrong with a tikka, they’re owned by Sako. Having said that, I’ve kept my Sako rifles and sold the Tikkas. Both are very accurate right out of the box.

Another nod for Tikka. Bought one in .270 for my boy when he turned 16.

Mounted a Leupold. Very solid rig.

Tikka over savage everyday. If your looking for precision, Savage is junk, no offense to anyone if they own one. If you just want it to go bang when you pull the trigger, then by all means go for it.

Tikkas are so popular here when I talk to someone who's getting into hunting and bought their first rifle I say "let me guess, a Tikka t3 in 7mm-08?" 9 times out of 10 I'm right.

I am also a southpaw, have 3 of the stainless Tikka's. Buy with confidence! They are a superb gun for the dollar! Very accurate and slick. Do not seehow you can get a better gun for the buck.

Thanks guys for the responses. Know I need to decide if I stick with 30-06 or go a different caliber route. The more I read the more confused I get about that 300 win mag or 6.5 cm.

Tough to beat an ‘06 in terms of ammo selection, price and availability of caliber everywhere.

I used a 30-06 for years and then when my testosterone peaked I bought a .300 Weatherby. The 300WBY is one of the only guns I sold when I finally grew up, now I have settled in to a .270 (which as you know is a necked down 30-06).

Really depends on what you need. 7mm Rem-mag is super popular. I’d just stay away from any bastard calibers personally.

By me, 300 yards is about as long of a shot as I will ever see.

For 600 yards or less, I’d stick with a .308. Ammo is cheap and plentiful, and practice is more important than a pissing match over calibers and ballistic coefficients.

That being said, I have a .308 and a .338 LM.

The 270 is about as perfect a mule deer cartridge for western hunting as you will find. Plus you can neck down your 06 brass to load for it. And it will handle elk and moose easily with a good bullet.

While the 300 WM is a heck of a round, it is simply not needed for Muley’s. Plus in the light Tikka, recoil can become an issue for some.

While the 6.5 Creedmore is all the rage recently, for a hunting rifle IMO it offers nothing over the 270 other than slightly less recoil.

My 3 Tikka rifles are in 243, 270 and 308.
