Everything is hard and dry in the desert, I've cut plenty of hard stuff, but I'm still trippin' on how hard that was. I stopped to check the chain twice, even though I checked it before I started. Worried a little something was wrong with the saw, checked tune...but then after the first cut, I saw and felt how hard and slick and smooth it was, and slapped it and tapped it with my knife...felt like slapping a rock, and practically rang like steel.

blocks.jpg tree blossoms.jpg Need help with ID of this tree. We have an idea this may be some kind of elm. It was a triple trunked tree that came down in an ice storm. Roots are still the ground, tree is green and wet. No objectionable odor, cut and split easily. Blossoms shown to aid identification. We are located about 50 miles SW of Richmond VA.
TIA, Rick

Some elm is straight grained and splits well enough, but it might be hickory. See if the bark is really hard and you'll know it is hickory. If it is like most other bark, then Elm.

I'm leaning toward Elm by the looks.

The only elm I know of that that’s white like that is American elm, but it usually doesn’t have quite that dark of a heart. When it’s green it splits like rubber. Creates lots of hydro splitter chaff. Red elm is almost brown inside and I believe Siberian elm is as well.
But yeah, the bark and buds looks like white elm. I’ve never seen a piece split as cleanly as his that still had bark on it

Well, supposedly I can have all I can cut & haul.
ID is unknown by the owner. My thoughts are red oak, maple, or elm?

What do you studs say?

Doesn't look anything like the red oak up by me. The bark is too thick. Doesn't look anything like maple either.
BUT those ants love the food in the middle!!! Lol

Took this down last week. Been standing dead a year or more. It was about 80’ tall with 2 - 2.5 duh. From lower slope of Ozark mountain.

I can split small rounds (8”) with my fiskars. Haven’t gotten to anything bigger yet. It has straight grain and the smell reminds me of sassafras.
Anyone ID it?

Howdy fellas. Here's a couple pieces of a branch that boke off a guys' tree. The whole tree is going to need to come down within the next couple years and will probably yield 3 cord or so. It's a good sized tree. So I was wondering what kind it is, so I have an idea of what I got. Thanks folks!
