I can't say much about softwoods because we have none .In my entire life time I doubt I've ever cut more than 3 or 4 pines .One of those was southern yellow that somehow ended up in Ohio and it was about like cutting oak .

In addition to that it split about like elm .That stuff ended up being on the slash pile ,good riddance .

Our Doug Fir here in the PNW is not all that soft and will not split easy at all until dry. The pitch in the "soft wood" can contribute to tough sawing as well.

There is another style with more block type letters that I assume is a latter version. It also has a much smaller logo. I will try to post it but so far I have been able to get the site to upload the file.

I just picked it up to put up here.

McCulloch SP125 crankshaft question:

Is it possible to use an SP125 crankshaft in a 101B engine using the 101B rod and piston combination? I am assuming that I need the correct crank - 69346 to make this work?

Chris, You can use the 125 or 797 crank in a 101. Same stroke and journal diameter.

Don - Based on the IPL's and other documents that I have the logo and lettering on the first vinyl bar cover appeared from 1960 -1964. The lettering in the literature and documents took on the more block like letters in 1965 so I would guess the bars covers are from roughly the same time frame.

I think the only vinyl bar cover I have with the block letters came with a neat little roller nose bar with the Auto-Mac oil passage to the nose of the bar.

McCulloch dropped the cMc and adopted the "mountain" logo around 1975.

Of course with all things McCulloch no time frame is rigidly fixed.

Those bar covers came in three different size widths as well.

Thanks Mark, I had figured those at about 5 to 10 years later.

Large fit the big wide Oregon, General & Cannon bars.
Medium fits the Mcculloch and later Oregon bar profiles.
Small must fit a Mini Mac though it is almost a medium.

Picked this one up a few days ago.
Started on the fifth pull with the fuel that was in it.

I picked up a couple Macs myself this past Sunday. A Super 44 and a PM 10-10. I have to track down a bar and work on the 44 carb. 10-10 runs well after some adjusting. The piston in the oiler on the 10-10 needed to be loosend up after sitting for so long I gather. Threaded the adjuster screw down and then back out. It oils well now also.Mcculloch Super 44 (1) 1.jpg Mcculloch Super 44 (4) 1.jpg Mcculloch 10-10 (2) 1.jpg

Very nice! I've never seen the recoil on the clutch side of a saw before... Very cool!

Mac's are kinda funny that way. The 740 - 797's have them as do the big frame gear drives. And some of the earlier "10" series saws do as well. If you like, you can install a starter on the other side as,well, and have two. Though I'm not sure why you would want this.
