The 242 has a top rpm of 15,500 the 42 is 15,200 I think on paper they say the 242 is more power but the later grey top feels the same as the 242 it's very lively hopefully Nico AKA Saw Troll will be along and give full specs

So what's the difference between the 42 special and 242?
you can more question what's the difference between 42 special vs 42.
On early 42 special, had Gilardoni/Mahle closed port cylinder, that said, I've never seen them, rumors.
Later, from 94 or so, IPL show 42 special and 246, no 42. I have one 97 model, Gilardoni 241A open port jug.

42 had Gilardoni 7 and 241A, open port cylinder.
242 have Mahle 42ZN13, closed port cylinder,

I would like to see serial tags on peoples 42 special + what marking the cylinder have.

I am no expert, but this has been discussed before, on different saw forums.

As far as I "read" it, there is no difference between the 42 and the 42 Special, it is just about marketing/decales and time - and closed port cylinders isn't a standard feature of the model.
If a 42 Special has one, it is most likely that the saw got that cylinder later - but such substitution (with the "lesser" models) does happen at saw factories, when parts are out of inventory.

I Can confirm that in the UK most of the 42 specials iv had through my hands have been as you describe . There was one 242xp though that instead of the closed port Mahle had a closed port Gilardoni cylinder…was the best running 242 xp iv had, all the others being Mahle.
