I picked up a garage sale 2156 with a stripped muffler bolt and scored piston that seemed like a swell find.
New coil, new carb, seals, cylinder & piston, simpler muffler, new lines, impulse, filters. It is still not running quite right.
I know more than I did that day at that garage sale including that I better not quit my day job to become the a small engine mechanic.
It's all for fun, though.

So it's S/N 03 1200248. A good start. Would only fire on choke, but popped and died on choke-in...

Impulse no bueno.
Changed it out for some HyWay curly wurly.
Also added the patented @tree monkey carb breather hole. On reassembly noticed the inlet manifold thread had been tightened plus some... IMG_20221008_151849.jpg IMG_20221008_160333.jpg
Starts and idles just fine now, but I'll grab another inlet manifold for the final XS build.

This saw is nothing if not a survivor.
It's of the era where it originally had the ridiculous auto decomp system, since capped off. Also had the inlet Plastic Clamp of Death, updated to the Steel Clamp of Stupidity.

The master mechanic also thought hiding a Torx screw up the muffler tube on an allen head saw would be a great laugh...

Diks.

Good thing I learnt from Daniel to undo the side you can and spin the muffler off the jug ay.
Since then I've learned to beat on the screw with a punch and a big hammer. The screw gets stuck to the muffler and not the cylinder so often a few good raps will break it loose and it'll come out with almost no effort.

Is a cool thread. My first saw was a 359 15ish years ago. Great saw glad to see they are still alive.

Fair enough, I may be able to save the cylinder. Whoever gave it to the person I got it from started stripping it down so it's missing clutch cover, muffler + bolts and bracket, top cover, and a very confusing at first throttle linkage. Plus needs a piston. Can get most of it from chainswr in the states other than top cover, clutch cover, and muffler bolts and bracket. For just under $200 delivered, including new genuine piston and gaskets filter and hose. So just waiting on Mr sky blue on trade me to reply with a cost for the rest to see if it's worth going ahead with.
Was that your combo pack of 357 bits sold by SkyBlue the other day mate?

Got my parts. Which centred around the fact I removed the transfer and saved the cylinder...... Someone made a boo boo and mustn't of dried the cylinder enough before sticking an oily rag in it, and now the plantings lifted.
In for a penny, in for a pound I guess

I know the feeling....
I have a cylinder you can have. OEM, plating is nice. One set of muffler threads stripped and the av attachment point is snapped off. Just thought I'd mention it but I suppose that it would be ungodly expensive sending for a trip to NZ....

Thanks for the offer. Much appreciated.
I'd imagine the freight would be a bit cost prohibitive though
