I heated up the PTO side bearing in some oil this morning and the oil melted the cage, I'm going to press the new one on. My question is that I see two differant bearings for the 440, one the seal goes on th inside of the bearing and the other has a lip and the seal goes on the outside, are they interchangeable? Also, are the 440 and 460 PTO side bearings the same?

I think the old bearing looks like this, I'll pop it out and double check.

The bearings for the 440 are not swappable, there is a PTO bearing and a flywheel bearing. On the PTO bearing the seal goes inside the lip of the bearing. The flywheel side has no lip and the seal fits in the case.

The 440 and 460 do have similar bearings but Stihl lists part# for each model.

That's the PTO side bearing. Like Kevin posted, the seal fits inside the outer race and then there's a bushing that the inner lip
of the seal fits up against. The PTO side bearings for the 044/046 aren't the same and I recommend sticking with the 044/440
bearing for that application.

Thanks, I was seeing the with and without the lip. The one on mine doesn't have that lip.

I'm sorry but I'm a little confused, I'm seeing the same part number for the one with a lip like loneoak posted and the one like I have, without the lip, are they intercangable?

There are several saws that use the same bearing. Some need the lip clearanced on the outside and some don’t. In my experience, on a 12 MM 044, the lip needs to be there to clear the oil pump

I only know of one style bearing for the pto side. The seal goes inside the bearing and that leading edge rests on the oil pump.
Mine was on the inside, my bearing didn't have an outside lip and I was thinking that the lip must be for a seal.
