How many spilt firewood pieces in a cord on average?

I count buckets of ash it's being turned into.

--which would be almost a coal bucket per face cord depending on the stove and how you fire it .

A tree guy I knew, Ron Standish told me once that the average firewood cord has 390 pieces. A friend recently stacked a cord accurately hand he split the pieces smaller and found more like 550 pieces. Is there a way to get an average on this?

Simple enough math calculation even for a firewood guy, 390+550= 940 divided by 2 =470
