Beware free...

The juice is rarely worth the squeeze.
We shall see.
Hopefully there's no catches.
The walnut logs are “free” only because he couldn’t sell them to someone else..

Look em over real good before sawing.

Sorry for the downer info, but most people are just *s-word, and there’s no such thing as free..

Fortunately, you have the ability to sort lumber from *s-wordty firewood..
I sawed lumber for this guy a couple years back without any trouble.
The story is, he was going to have me mill the logs for him but he procrastinated and eventually changed his mind.
I looked at these logs when they were still trees and they were all "woods trees" not "farm trees", so hopefully nothing wrong with em.... other than being partially rotted.

I agree, you have to watch out for "free deals" but I've actually paid really close to zero (other than operating expenses) for most of the logs I've gotten this year.

Good morning Steve

And good morning to everyone else.
Looking to be another mild day, already over 30f going to 43f.
Looking like we should have decent travels weather, claiming near 50f for at least Sat and Sunday.

I have a pile of walnut that I wish I had never cut, the only reason I cut it was because it was going to be dozed out for a pond to be built. There might be a few boards in some of it but I believe it’s mostly firewood & lower btu firewood at that...

My time would of been better served doing almost anything else. I am still not sure what I was thunking…

Its free if anyone wants it otherwise I will have to c/s/s it.

A guy called me this morning to see if I wanted some free black walnut logs.?....of course...View attachment 401278

He asked me to take some cedar as well and make him four 6x6s.
Fortunately I saw the lag before I sawed into it.

Planning to take them back in the morning, and get the other half of the walnut logs.
A metal detector is a tooth saving instrument, even if you find loose change rather than gold rings that were sought in the dream world that bought the thing.

I was never thinking of saw logs, just looked at it as easy access firewood. I had a friend that wanted a mantle from one log but has since changed his mind. I guess the free part turned him off.
Is it really that bad for firewood?
It gets a lot of hate it seems.....I haven't burned enough to know.
It splits nicely anyways.

Got the rest of it today....along with a big fat chunk of cherry.... 20231221_113346.jpg20231221_113358.jpg

Cut this post oak for my sister this evening....that'll make good firewood.....

I always liked Walnut in a fire. I found that although it doesn’t last as long as white oak, nor as hot, but it gets going faster to get the oak and hickory going good.
