It’s not bad to split. Basically anything down to about 3” is firewood size to me. To reason to split anything under about 8” especially since you have plenty of wood, stack it & forget about it. It’s not like it’s going to sit in the stacks & rot or shrivel away to nothing. The older it is the better it burns.

I'm pretty much the same with what I keep, except I'll go down to 2 or so inches. We don't have the surplus of wood/trees most places do, so I'm pretty stingy with what I throw away. I didn't split any of it yet. I have pretty big piles of wood, all in log form, since I have about 3 years worth split. I just added it to the log piles for now.

Yeah, the little stuff with all its thorns is a pain but hedge is my wood of choice. My only problem is finding landowners that will let me cut. Right now, I'm cutting on a pie e of property between Mulvane and Udall. About 20 minutes south of Wichita

Yep, those little limbs will reach out an grab ya, no matter where ya walk it seems and it doesn't compress in a trailer like alot of other brush does. We don't have much of it out here, that I know of. About the only hedge I know of, is mostly fence posts, that are decades old. This tree is the only larger hedge tree I've seen in real life.

Hedge trees fight back. At the wrong time of year, the sap is like Elmer's glue. They can be limby bastids; so a lot of work for not much firewood. Although, the small stuff can be great stove wood also. Yes, heavy!!! Like others have said, not bad to split.

We cut it down on the 19th of December and it had a crazy amount of sap in it and yeah, it was a frickin mess! I've never seen sap like it and it was plentiful. I'll get a picture here in a bit, of some of it. Have a good week everyone! We finally got some moisture out here, well, enough to make a little difference anyways.

IMG_20201229_142122_813.jpg Figured I'd best just do it now before I get sidetracked. This whole pile is pretty much what I've acquired this year. I've gave alot to a friend, so he can have a few years built up.

Had some snow early I’d say 4”-5” but it’s mostly sleet & rain now with an occasional burst of heavy large flaked wet snow. Starting to ice up on the trees & powerlines. The guessers have us in the 1/2” ice range. Fortunately the winds haven’t started blowing here yet, that may make things a little hairy.

We got some big old hedge trees round here.

Conditions must be right.

Holy crap! That thing is a frickin monster! That thing looks like it rivals our locust trees or old cottonwoods along a creek. That's impressive. I bet that leaves a huge pile of limbs for the burn pile. Thanks for sharing the picture Hedge.

That is good to know.
I almost bought one of them before deciding on a Sprinter.
I'm very glad I went the direction that I did!

The full size transit is rwd, that Dodge bug looking thing is fwd.

Ive looked at the Fords and just can't do it. Besides being a ford the cabin feels a little cramped.

That's some awesome firewood porn! What John Deere is that? I have a guy trying to sell me a cs56 with a scored piston for $50. Unless there's a lot more to this sae than I think, I wouldn't give more than 10 or 15 for it. What say you guys that know this saw?

We have 5-6in so far and the wind is picking up
Have a 4ft drift between the house and shop
2ft plus drifts on the road coming home
If winds blow all night like supposed to won’t be going to work in morning

I've had great luck with Fords. Just wish ALL manufacturers would give some thought for those of us that use the stupid vehicles. When I purchased my 06 E350 in 06 (used with 26k on it) I looked at the Sprinter and wanted to like it but purchase price was just too steep plus cost of maintenance and service locations kept me away. Drove that E350 until 300k and sold it as the company wanted me to downsize. Still ran great and never had that much problem with getting around in winter.

BrettL, I believe the CS56 is a 56cc EFCO if my memory serves me correctly.

If the bottom end is good and no other parts are required to have a 100% functional
saw (no missing parts, broken plastic, chain brake handle etc.) $50 would be a fair price
IMHO.

Wait for Grumpy to respond as he is a Lot more knowledgeable than I on the JD saw.

You would be correct. If the cylinder can be cleaned up you should be good
