Anyone on here very familiar with these style Mccullochs, wodnering if someone could tell me what model saw this is, I think it may be a 740, possibly an 890. I couldn’t find a serial tag on it anywhere. Does anyone know if there should be one and where would it be? Thanks in advance!

This saw looks like a Mac that Paul Newman would loved to have used in the movie "Sometimes a Great Notion". Just MHO

However, his might have been a few years older. This one appears earlier than my 1977 Mac 610. Mine runs today and has a pull cord and a strong engine. By comparison, this saw looks beat up.

Checked on a Facebook forum, and consensus is 740 103cc

Late to the game, definitely not a gear drive 890, could be several models, or a combination of many! The block number will be the only thing that will make any major difference, strange things can happen in the large frame Macs!
A pic from the other side would help, and the block number will tell the story on cc’s and original life, as far as that goes, heck it could even have a kart motor, doubtful thou.

If it has the DSP and automatic oil pump then it could be a 795 or 797; 103 or 123cc displacement

Without the DSP and with automatic oil pump it would be a 740 or 790; 99 or 103cc displacement.

Without an automatic oil pump it is one of the 1-7X models, probably a 1-72, 1-75, or 1-76. The 1-70 had a different AF cover and the 1-71's were normally all yellow.

If the model number appears on the saw, it will be stamped on the bottom of the crankcase. Since many of the blocks could be made into different models, you will frequently find two model numbers, one it a line through it. This one is a direct drive 790, but with the addition of the gearbox it could have been an 890.

It also appears to have been bored 0.020" oversize as some point.
