Going to be doing some bar/chain combination testing this coming Sunday to see what's best for my 031. Currently has a 3/8 7 pin rim on it. I have 2 bars and a variety of chains to try on it and they are as follows:

20" Stihl ES bar, RM semi chisel and Oregon full chisel

16" Stihl E standard bar and Oregon 72LGX full chisel. Wish that I could have grabbed a loop of RM to fit the 16" but I will when I'm able to and redo this comparison.

I'm curious, what will be faster?

Videos to come once testing is complete.

Not that it's the best, but would think the 16" lgx would be the fastest.

I’m going with the 16” RS being fastest

That powercut LGX seems to have a improved profile over the old LGX. More hook. In my test in hickory it was within 1/2 second or so with RS. Both new out of box. Which is pretty close, taking into consideration variables in the wood. Oregon chain is usually cheaper to buy and cuts smoother... less vibes. The advantage RS offers is that it is consistent and holds a edge better... which also makes it a little harder to handfile. Comes down to preference.
I made the times slide in the end too fast, if you pause the video you can see them.

I've seen videos showing LGX to be faster than stihl RS out of the box, it does look to be sharpened better at the factory.
After one sharpening they're equal tho so it's not a big deal if one is a hair faster than the other out of the box.

So what's the score after you squared them up?
Inquiring minds want to know
I don’t do square, but I should have asked Dan to square them up just out of curiosity. He was busy helping rebuild saws, so I didn’t want to bother him.

And yes that particular stihl dealer marks up the price spectacularly on chains. I would never buy a loop of 24” chain for 40$. But it was the day before the test and the other dealers were closing soon... so I took one for the good of the community lol. I get Oregon chain from work, it’s what we normally use.

I still run both and tossing in some Raisman short bar 3/8" lp and Arch 100dl or so in 3/8" 0.063.
Need some more 404 to test more brands on the mill. 117 or 167 dl's of 404 is a tall order to fill with good links. 3/8" setups are working their way in with 120dl or less.

Forty two doll hairs for 84 drivers, yikes. That's ignorant. Loggerchain sells the EXL for 25 bucks. That dealer wouldn't get any support from me.

I know right, I asked them is this price for real and they said yes. Won’t be walking in that door again. Logger chain is great, I've bought from them a few times.

That is nuts! Wonder what a damn bar would cost? Who is he catering to?

Testing postponed till next weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to get a loop of RM for the 16" by then.
