Have a new 1911 from Colt. Came with a great magazine from Checkmate. Tried to buy more, seems they are out of stock most everywhere I look. Do you have recommendations for brand of magazine? Have not had good luck with Wilson Combat mags with failure to return to battery, and bad luck with Mec-Gar, with failures to lock open after last shot.

I have had good luck with Sig 1911 magazines, but then again, my 1911 is a Sig.

You could try a Springfield armory or Kimber mag. I know a Springfield armory mag work in my Kimber 1911 and the Kimber mag works good in my Springfield 1911.

I'll trade you my Mec-Gar and a few bucks for a Kimber or Chip or Checkmate? I only put about 250 rounds through the Mec-Gar

i have never cleaned them other than an external wipedown after a range trip, they have been 100% reliable for the 5 or 6 years since I bought my .45.

it sat loaded for approx 3 years and a few weeks ago I took it outback and shot the self defense ammo out of it and loaded with fresh stuff (speer gold dot).

my .45 really hasnt been shot a whole lot, maybe 500 rounds through it, it hangs out in my work clipboard in my work truck so I cant comment on how the kimber mags hold up to lots of use, but I can say that mine have sat for years loaded and they functioned properly.

10 round mags are more prone to have issues and I ran a lot of rounds through CMC 10 rounders. So did a lot of others.

I’ve had many 1911’s since 1980, my friend was a gun smith and I was trying to find some Colt mags for a 38 Super back then and having no luck.
He recommended “Metalform” mags to me, he had showed me some oem Colt mags with this small “m” stamped on the bottom and told me that was one of their suppliers.

I just got 5 from Gun Mag Warehouse for a new Kimber 9 I bought, they all function 100% and compare to the quality of my Kimber oem. (no Kimber mags were in stock at the lgs).

I have 1911 mags from a lot of manufacturers. Wilson, Kimber, Metalform, McCormick, Mec-Gar, Ruger (made by Metalform) Colt, Taurus, Springfield and probably a couple of others I can’t recall right now.
In my guns, Metalform mags have been flawless. I only use 7rd mags.
Mec-Gar, not so much. I wouldn’t buy one, unless I didn’t have any mags and nothing else was available.
Wilson’s are good but overpriced.
The rest are just Meh. Not bad but not perfect. I don’t own any Checkmate 1911 mags. After finding Metalform, I never felt the need to look any further.
I bought my Metalform mags directly from the manufacturer. Unfortunately, it looks like they no longer offer factory direct sales.

My only expereinace with a US model M1911 was in the navy made by Colt .Seven round clips we only carried 5 rounds in to prevent damage to the springs . I'd be lucky to hit Lake Erie from a row boat with that hand cannon .As I recall the "effective " range is only about 75 feet but it punches a big hole ..

I have a WW2 era Ithaca. Inside 25 yards, it is one of the most accurate pistols I’ve ever shot. Most 1911’s are more accurate than striker fired. At least in my experience. And from everyone I’ve ever witnessed. Your results may differ.
