Or lack there of. What in the world happened here. No air filter? Too little oil? High hours? This one has me impressed.

It looks like it is mostly confined to the intake and crank area and less toward the transfers/exhaust. I vote no air filter..

I'll take a pic of the piston and intake side later. In all fairness this isn't off a saw its off an echo srm 280t brushcutter. I got it in a pile of parts missing a lot of it. I would say it's a missing air filter if I had to guess. I've seen worn plating before just not this bad, it has a a ring right at the top worn off. You can tell right where the ring end was cause there is still plating there.

Those 280s were pretty notorious for stuff getting past the air filter. It wasn't a good design at all, which is too bad because the engine was actually a great design.
