Been hand filing for a while now. Round ground I'm ok at. Square ground is a pain in the...

Don't know much about grinders but would like to get one. Is there a reasonably priced grinder for square ground chains? Can one grinder do square and round ground chains?

School me please...

The only square grinder available new is the Simington Swing Arm. $1000. They only do square

If a guy is handy, he could build his own grinder for pennies on the dollar.

I love the cutting speed with square ground vs round but it's a pain to sharpen with file and takes too long. Trying to find a more efficient way but it's not worth spending $1000 on a grinder for me being a weekend warrior. Maybe I should just stick with round...

35° tilt on the grinder head, 25° top plate angle and 5° down angle with .025" depth gauges is pretty fast. Seems to hold a decent edge.

I’d rather spend the $1000 on a new or slightly used bigger saw for faster cut times. For me square grinding isn’t worth the time or money. But if you were grinding 10 chains a week and we’re able to solicit some sharpening business then maybe.

The good thing about square grinders is that due too there scarceness & restrictive initial cost to own one they really tend to hold there value. I bet you could buy a decent used Silvey, use it grinding chains for 2 years & get your money back selling it.

Ill stick to my Stihl USG grinder. I am not one to fix what isn't broke. I have similar measurements to Huskihl. I guess I shld try one of these square chains someday. How do they like hardwoods. Ive heard they prefer softwood.

My personal experience...

It cuts faster soft or hardwood. First time I used one was in hardwood. And it flew through. I was impressed. So to me its faster no matter what wood I'm cutting. Just a pain when it comes time to sharpen. Maybe I just keep a couple square ground chains for fun and let dealer sharpen them when needed.

Do most dealers sharpen square???

No, most dealers do not have a square grinder. Some don't even know what square ground chain is.

On the West coast it's a different story though.

Most guys I talk too, when you bring up square ground chain they think you mean chisel chain. With the squared off cutter tooth. So yea not popular in my area. And doubtful I am going to buy a 1000.00 grinder to see if I can get it to catch on.

Let’s just put it this way It’d take someone with a lot of money for me to sell my Silvey and buy a Simington. Stock out of the box square well junk even with the rakers down it’s slow not even and can pull side to side when letting go in a cut.

This works good:
