I have an MS250 and a husq 450, and I'd like to know beforehand if removing the two crank bearings is easy, hard, not worth it buy a whole new saw?

And would a simple clam shell bearing separator something like this work?
https://www.autozone.com/test-scan-...e-puller-and-bearing-separator-set/347218_0_0

I do not plan on ever doing more than these two saws so four bearings total, I think I am doing just rings on the MS250 but new rings and new cylinder on the 450, but for the low cost of bearings I'm this far in I'd prefer to replace them so long as it does not turn in to a disaster project. thanks.

The MS250 is a clam shell design. The whole saw has to be disassembled to replace the crank bearings. (Many guys hate the clam shell saws like the 250 -- I really don't mind them at all).
You can use a bearing separator like you have pictured or a simple 2 jaw puller to remove the bearings from the crank with a small 12v type impact. Done it many times.
Use a better grade bearing in the MS250 as well.

Most of the non clam shells use what is called heat shrink fit .The process, right from the book is heat the bearing pockets up using a heat gun .torch or whatever you have .Once you get on to it it's relatively easy . Some use case seperating tools but few can afford it just doing a few DIY repairs .
If you do these repairs the heat is the secret not beating on the saw with a big ball peen hammer like you are driving a rail road spike .All that will do is cause more problems . If you can't visualise it go to You Tube .It will be on there some place .

Best tool to remove crank bearings from conventional metal cases? That split in half? A a turkey roaster. AND it works as well to put new ones back in! Two for the price of one.

Like they say there must be a zillion ways to skin the same cat but the end results are the same .Bearings on Stihl or Partner usually are heat shink both housing and shaft .You can remove them with the crankshaft or without .It's simple freeze heat deal . I prefer to remove the entire rotati
ng assembley as a unit ,replace the bearings and reassemble bearings on the crank .Bearings will last a long time unless you get stingy with the fueel/oil ratio which goes right back to the great oil debate .
