I debated this with others for quite awhile, but now I think I have it figured out.

I started out using a 6 tooth spur and 16" bar in Picco. This seemed very vanilla. So using what I had, I used a .325" 7T spur, 18" bar and Stihl RS chain. In this setup, it was very impressive, but I thought it still had more.

This time I got a 16" .325" bar and chain and this quickly became my favorite setup. Very fast cut times.

Next I got a 7T Spur for the 3/8LP, and quickly went to a rim sprocket setup. I ordered a new 18" Picco bar, and a new Stihl PM chain. This without a doubt is my favorite setup on the 241. People who think it cant pull it, are crazy. Speed is impressive, the extra reach is very nice, and this seems to be ideal.

On a side note, I have a 14" Picco bar, and I cant stand it. It looks ridiculous, like Bobo the clown riding his tricycle.

It took me a little while to dial it in for my preferences. I did a muffler mod and advanced the timing too. This saw is still my favorite, by a huge margin. Cant wait to get it a 462 brother, but the 241 is phased out completely.

My good ole buddy @maulhead suggested I do this here. If you need any specific advice or help on why your 241 is a better saw than a 261, PM me. I'll be glad to help.

Run side by side with a 261, I'll take the 241 any day. Lighter and smoother all day long. KIWI I didnt get the 241 on a drunken whim with no research. Hell, even the "God like", never wrong, Mr @blsnelling has said he prefers the 241 as well.

You've actually done this then?

It depends on what you are after. I've never noticed much difference in smoothness or vibration between the two. But I do notice that for not much more weight, the 261 is much, much stronger. I prefer the 261 mainly for this reason. And with a simple muff mod and timing advance, the 261 is an animal. One of the few saws that doesn't need porting to get 30%+ cut speed. To each their own.

7pin 3/8lp is defenitly the fastest setup for the 241.
I use that setup with a 14“ bar

I run it with a 18". Oregon's field trial has me using a setup like you listed on a MS180. So the 241 can definitely handle more.

The last 261 I bumped the timing on and modded the muffler is a pretty bad ass saw after they get good and run in.

My ported 261 that's strato gutted is a strong versatile saw but it'll drink a tank of fuel pretty fast. What I like the most about the 241 in near stock form is how much work you can do on a tank of fuel. There is enough difference & reason to own both saws for pro use. I wonder when the 241 will get a facelift with new turbo clutch cover, V3 super turbo MT & stuff. It was one of the first MT saws released & is due for some upgrades. Be cool if it lost a lb or so.

That's what impressed me most about the 241. Closely followed by the neat balance and power. I was clearing land of dense small trees. The time savings alone on that one job were significant.
