I have a just out of the box 395. What are the simplest upgrades to it? I'm planning on opening up the muffler first. Is there a ratio of exhaust port to muffler size? 70 %? 80 %? 90%?. Straight pipe it? What about timing advance? Upgrade the air filter? Base gasket delete? Thanks!

I would suggest you get it ported, there's several good guys on here or Joe at HMWF can do it.. the % gains on the 395 are very substantial with porting, should be able to get over 10hp and they'll typically do muffler mod and timing advance for you as part of it

Easiest muffler mod is to add an extra deflector in front of the OEM one. Dyno Joe has stamped deflectors that make it easy.

As far as % size of the outlet, I have not seen any detriment by going very large.

Ignition advance is usually around 1/3 keyway.

The OEM air filter is a great filter and there is no reason to upgrade it.

Base gasket delete will depend on the initial squish clearance which is usually in the mid 0.040's, as long as removing the gasket wont get you below 0.020" then do it.

Delete the base gasket.
Modify the muffler.
Remove limiter caps.
Leave factory air filter on it and ensure the air injection tube is still there, guiding clean air from behind the flywheel into the filter.

Enjoy.

Mine is woods ported and pulls a 42” bar hard enough that a 60” would certainly be well within its capacity.

The only thing I’d change would be to angle my added muffler port to the right more: it blackens a big log when it’s up blowing on one spot for any amount of time. That happens quite a bit when pivoting on the dogs while bucking a 30-40” oak.

All of those mods will help, but sending it to get ported really turns them onto a beast! I love mine from @Mastermind ! Pulls a 42 in hardwood with ZERO issues.
