The file size, it’s all spec out by manufacturers , for the average consumer, whatever gets you the best cutting edge according to ur conditions and wood ur cutting, it’s all about experimenting and finding what’s works for you, file sizes are kinda a choice,How come 3/8 X cut uses a 7/32 file instead of a 13/64 file? Does it clean out the gullet better?
I think most all manufacturers recommend 7/32 except stihl. How come 3/8 X cut uses a 7/32 file instead of a 13/64 file? Does it clean out the gullet better?
13/64 is also made to fit STIHL’s 2n1 sharpener system holding the file a little higher on the tooth.. FWIW, I’ve always used 7/32 on all 3/8 chains, including STIHL.Most recommend 7/32. Stihl recommends 13/64. Might be so guys buy more of their files due to being proprietary. Might also be because with their slightly harder steel, a smaller file leaves a sharper cutter with more hook so it cuts faster and the better steel keeps it sharp as long as others

It’s fine.What about using 13/34 on X cut?

Use it if you need to, when hand filing you can file accordingly. 7/32 is the preferred size and I finish when the tooth is getting small with a 3/16. Just file it to keep the hook. It’s not bad chain but remember after the first filing you loose the xcut shape which is kinda between square and round. File it use itHow come 3/8 X cut uses a 7/32 file instead of a 13/64 file? On the back of the box it says 7/32" file, 30° swing, 0° tilt: that files a tooth in one operation, but it's not how the chain comes. How come 3/8 X cut uses a 7/32 file instead of a 13/64 file? Does it clean out the gullet better?
What brand of file?I file my stuff with 7/32 and they cut better than out of the box. Just finished touching one up a few minutes ago...
X cut is pretty hard and will dull a file rather quickly.
Right now I'm using Husqvarna, they're working pretty good. Also have save edge and pferd no real preference of one over the other. What brand of file?
VallorbeWhat brand of file?
@julie wolf and I both used PFERD Classic Chainsaw Files, no issues, though she was only taking 1 to 3 strokes off the very tip of the top-plate, and I'm guessing 1-2 off the side plates. I got into a mess and took 15-20 strokes off some chains, the metal bits were piling up, she was laughing...Right now I'm using Husqvarna, they're working pretty good. Exactly,Anything from 5/32 to 7/32, (even 1/4” when new) will work on 3/8”, it’s more about the filer than the file

I hear Vallorbe is awesome, just couldn't get my hands on any thanks to the gov't shutdown and supply line shortages (or something).
