So I fixed a 242 XP for someone I know.
I got her running good, she needed an air filter, a fuel filter and a carb kit.
She runs and idles like new but now she cuts out whenever I put the top cover back on and won't restart until I take it off again.

Any ideas?

I took out the little plastic shutter thing to the right of the trigger grip in case she wasn't getting enough air.
Maybe the top cover is messing with the spark plug cable?

You could have a break in the wire under the spark plug boot, I had a 372 do this. I'd check all the wires for bare spots and breaks.

Sounds to me the top cover is interfering with the throttle linkage.

Since the coil is under the top cover on these saws, check the wiring to the coil and make sure nothing is pinched when the cover goes back on.

There was insulation tape around the wire going to the plug. There was a cut underneath this tape. Every time I put the cover back on the cut was being opened and the spark was being stopped.
Luckily the ignition coil from a 281xp fits the 242xp and I was able to use one from my own 281xp.
The saw is running perfect now.
