Maybe opening up that side will keep the air filter from getting infested with chips so quickly. I don't know what is is about 0 series Stihls but it seems they have a snorkel to the chain cover.
No doubt! That's why she's all lopsided now. Thing can chuck some chips now. I about buried my feet making test cuts after work.

Oh... I also put some of that mesh in the stow pocket for the winter mode panel. I'll never run winter mode. That may be the snorkel. Time will tell.

After 2 full work days of pretty nasty clearing... 1st picture shows how dirty this site made the saw... Next two, the airfilter. I didn't clean it once. Also you can see how I attached the cover latch tab to the filter to update it to fit. So far this airbox mod is tits. Sounds good, keeps clean. I recommend similar to anyone with the 0 series. Thanks again @drf256 for the filter, and ported p&c! It's breaking in nicely. Sounds balanced. And even with my leaky muffler cover, it puffs REAL hard at the exit. 20230414_093515.jpg20230414_093500.jpg20230414_093508.jpg
(I really need to get around to installing that adjustable bar oiler... This thing just slops oil)

What's the difference.between the 038 mag and a 380/381?
Couldn't tell you. I know the mag is 52mm. The bolt spacing and bore is different going from av to mag. But if Stihl followed what they did with the 026/260 lineage....

Anyhow Rich, seems oem is relative unobtanium. I'm going hyway. I just need hl supply to get back to me about swapping out the one they sent with massive casting voids in the squish... 20230414_140710.jpg

The next one might be worse. China parts are never going to be like oem.

Run it if the ports and plating are good.

I imagine I need to work the squish anyway. And yes, no doubt it's a dice roll wit da Chineseum.

Total dice roll Nate. Last Hyway jug I tried looked ok to the naked eye, but the plating wore off around 10-15 mm from the band in under two tanks. Thoughts were that the cylinder was tapers at the top, or that the plating was just thinner up there. I did port the jug and make it a harder runner than stock.

I know you’re faced with not being able to find oem, but I would just wait. The am jugs are just not worth all the work just to find out that they will fail in short order. Meteor makes the best AM jugs IMHO. Won’t run as hard, but the plating is the hardest stuff I’ve ever encountered.

In an effort to help keep things organized, I did start another thread for Andrew's 038 magnum.

Two totally different saws.
Right... I'm more geared towards the bore diameter, the bolt pattern and the base to squishband measurement(s). I'll have to see if the Stihl guys in town have the specs/bolt patterns for the 038mag and the MS380.

380 has a much different pattern.
