    The Official Aussie Gumtree Thread

Hi Guys, Bob from Massachusetts here. I have a quick question about the redgum and ironwood. Is it the usual practice to just use a chainsaw to block up the wood for burning in a wood stove? Is this wood so gnarly that it can't be run through a splitter? Okay, sorry, another question: what parts...

High end oil debate belray h1r vs motul 800 2t

The only reason I would change oils is for the newer saws with the solenoid carburetors. I'm sure older oil blends work great in older saws, but perhaps the newer saws need newer oil blends. I'm not saying this is true for sure, but just perhaps it might be the case. Kind of like what's going on...

    clamshell lapping

Dale's Pale Ale from Brevard NC, yet they sell it all the way up here in MA. Good stuff if you like hoppy beer. I grew up drinking Rolling Rock and it's not like ole "33" at all. I recall seeing this done on dirt bike engines and indeed they use a twisting motion with the piece. Also, some...

    clamshell lapping

I'm working on a Homelite 240. It's a 39cc homeowner saw with a reed valve inake and a split base (clamshell) design. I needed to smooth the two surfaces of the crankcase before reassembly, so I found an old piece of tile and spray-glued some 400 grit sand paper to it. Seems to work pretty well.

Everyday day man's tree work and cutting thread

Hi Norm, do you have to buy your own saws or does the county buy them? How about the little things like sharpening chains or replacing parts? Is that your responsibility? I know what you mean when you say that no two trees are the same. I do trail work in Massachusetts and it's amazing how many...

    Chainsaw Porting Theory

The role of the bottom end (crankcase volume) interests me as to how it relates to what type of modifications would work best on the top end. I've searched google until my eyes glaze over and haven't found anything that we could use as a "rule" such as if the crankcase volume is x% of the...

Hey Guys, I hate to recind this offer, but we just got slammed with a huge bill due to a broken hot water heater and flooded basement. I've got to scrape some cash together to get that stuff paid off, but also wanted to be up front with you all as well. Sorry I can't help out now.

Anybody else satisfied with stock chainsaws?

I bought my 550XP off eBay about 2 months ago. I tore it down when I got it and it was super clean. I was totally psyched because it was a good deal ($425) on eBay but i didn't know the seller so I was prepared for the worst. I've run it for maybe 10-15 hours (10-15 tanks) in the last 2 months...

The 550XP has impressed me so far. Totally stock, not even a muffler mod, and it cuts with authority.

    Old Giants

Nice stuff Lee. My friend and I found a 12-25 in a barn in PA when we were in high school in the late 70s. We got it running, kind of, and then lost interest in it. I think his Dad ended up throwing it in a dumpster. Makes me nauseous now just thinking about that missed opportunity to have...

    Explain to me heated handles...

Anyone try making their own heated handles with some clever plumbing of exhaust gas? As I'm getting older, I'm having more trouble keeping my hands from turning into useless lumps when the temps dip below freezing, so maybe a re-direction of some exhaust gas can help out a bit...

    372 bottom feed debate

I thought that design was just intended to reduce friction losses between piston and cylinder. I wonder if the fresh charge entering the crankcase even gets to the transfer tunnels prior to the piston descending from TDC?

    light enough to carry two

Even when I'm just out for a hike, I'll carry some hand snips with me (and maybe my Silky handsaw) so I can sever the vines on the trailside trees. I might even hate vines more than mosquitos (but still not as much as hornets.)
