Anybody dye plastic chainsaw parts?

I'm looking to change the color on my hybrid but didn't want to use paint on the plastics. I did a Google search and watched some YouTube videos on dying plastic. Has anyone tried it? Let me know.

I've heard only black works. I think it was Hedgerow that did it.

I've seen guys dye pmags all sorts cool patterns using rit dye. Google "dyeing pmags" and have fun.

This is pretty interesting. I'm also planning on changing my hybrid to black. I ordered a set of farmertec plastics to paint. My originals are in nice shape so I want to save them.

Mine didn't have a decomp hole so I got the Farmertech also.

Just read a bunch from the pmags people. Now I have all kinds of ideas! I'll be trying this tomorrow morning and will post results and methods. That is if it works!

Yup, Matt has done it. I believe black is about the only color you can use if I remember right.

OK I worked 3-11 last night and I have a 3/1 double today. So last night I came home and degreased the parts and got everything ready for today. Woke up to almost 9 inches of snow this morning according to my daughters snow ruler!

I got my water started on the stove while I dug a path to the grill and got it fired up. Moved the pot to the grill and added the dye.

Gave it a good stir and added the parts! After only a short while they were starting to transform!

I left it alone while I went on snow removal and stirred about every 15 minutes. After about an hour they look like this!

In letting them go a while longer just make sure I have a deep black color and because this is my first try at dying parts! More to come!

That's cool. I wonder how deep the dye penetrates into the plastics? All the way or just the surface few thou? Thinking of future scratches here, wondering if they would show black or weather they would show orange

I should have added the cut off peices from the cylinder cover and then cut it and see how deep it went.

I didn't measure the water I just put enough in the pot to cover the parts. I added one bottle of liquid Rit dye. After stirring I added another half of a bottle of dye.
