Hello,
I’m new here... just have a few questions, maybe someone here knows the answer.

I’m experiencing a leak on the PTO side of the crank around a bushing. After looking at the service manual I believe there is supposed to be an o-ring there. However, it is not listed in the IPL.

Does anyone know a part number for this o-ring? Thanks.

When you do your pressure/vacuum test you need to have the washer and clutch installed.

Thanks. That’s kind of what I figured. But I’m missing that o-ring. Even with the clutch on, it didn’t seal. I had a leak between that bushing and the crank.

I've never replaced that oring. Typically that oring will either disintegrate after some run time or disappear totally.
Have you replaced the crank bearings?

No I haven’t replaced the bearings. I’m working on a new to me 044. The only thing I’ve done is put a carb kit and a fuel line on it. I’ve been having trouble getting the idle dialed in, so I tried a pressure/vac test and noticed that leak. When I pulled that bushing out, I noticed it was missing the o-ring.

Um... maybe?

Sorry... not the oil seal. My leak is between the bushing and the crank right where the tip of the pick is at.

It appears the seal does not directly contact the crank, the ID of the seal rides on the OD of that bushing. There needs to be some kind of seal between the bushing and the crank. Like the o-ring depicted in the service manual.

Smear some motoseal or rtv on the inside of the bushing and tighten the clutch. Some 044's had them, some didnt.

I’ll probably have to give that a try, or maybe take the bushing to the hardware store and try to find something that fits. Seems kind of hard to believe that they show it in the service manual, but don’t list the part. Thanks.

I believe only the early ones had it. If you had an early ipl, it may show it.

What Jacob said, and make sure you use some grease when you replace the bushing.

I also hear a member buys O rings at the auto parts store and uses a tight fitting one in place of the one Stihl used to use, but I have never used one.

I did replace seals on my 044, but never pulled the bushing.
