Damn, my '12 Yukon over heated earlier today when my wife was on her way home with the kids. Not sure what happened yet. I may need to start a thread and get you smart mechanic guys help. It went into limp mode and she shut it off. It cooled off by the time I got there and didnt see any coolant on the dip stick or anything leaking under it. The reservoir was empty but could see and smell coolant so maybe it puked it out. She was only 1000 ft from home when it happened. I put 2 gallons of water in it and had her drive it home. The engine is now cold and the reservoir is empty. I didnt see a white cloud out the tail pipe when she drove it home so I'm not sure if its burning it. More than 2 gallons seems like a lot to lose if it just boiled over and theres no reason it should. I will pull the plugs tomorrow and check them. Only one code, P1258 over temperature protection mode activated.

No obvious leaks?
The new Dex-cool coolant typically does not smoke much out the tailpipe but has a distinct odor.
Head gasket failures are very uncommon.
Broken heater pipe fittings are common.
Has the temp been colder than normal? Had some that froze the coolant and sheared the water pump impeller.

Fill it up. If you dont have a pressure tester, run it and look for leaks. Have someone inside to watch the temp guage.

Dont waste time pulling the plugs unless you plan to replace them at this time.
