Any idea who this guy is? Is he a local? He looks a lot like a friend of mine that would do something that dumb but he's not local to you, but has done some firefighting...

Dunno, but having fell through the ice twice accidentally, I can say yes, anything in your hands will be used to help get you out will be hung on to. It was actually an axe that allowed the distance between a friend that allowed him to pull me out. The other time I was on my own and had to use the ice Spud in my hand at the time to help myself. A nice warm place to retreat to would have been nice either time.
I've never fallen through, but I helped a fishing buddy get out once. He was carrying the auger and casually tapping the ice in front of him while finding our spot. Walked into a thin area presumably from a spring, and went through. I was dragging a portable shanty and threw him the rope while I stayed a few feet away. He put the back of his neck against the ice and got his knees up to the front side of the hole and pried himself out in a matter of a few seconds. At least we weren't too far from the warm carDunno, but having fell through the ice twice accidentally, I can say yes, anything in your hands will be used to help get you out will be hung on to. The one time I went ice fishing here my buddy made sure we all had a screw driver at the ready to help claw a way out of the ice.
