Love reading all this but I think the OMS moniker should be changed to Common Since Saw.

I know we’re getting sidetracked, but I think I agree with Bob on a lot of points. There’s so much work to do on the days I’m in the woods that I just want a reliable saw, it doesn’t have to be the fastest, just needs good power and a sharp chain. I can do basic mods, and I have a lathe and mill and work as a machinist, besides a right angle foredom tool to do upper transfers I can do everything else myself. I just think that the 5+ hours tearing down, measuring, degreeing, grinding, boring, testing, etc will never be gotten back by saving 2 seconds in a cut. So I can’t justify it in terms of work productivity.

Maybe for the “fun” factor some people can justify spending the money or time on it, but the best reason I see to do it is because it would allow using a smaller saw when normally I’d feel like a larger saw is necessary.

My 562xpg as a 60cc saw is about doing everything I need these days- I still have my 372xpw and 395xp, but their use is getting less and less. I love running them, but finding the wood where they are needed is getting to be more of a “for that particular job” than for a “I’ll just grab this saw as I trust it can do what I need today.”

I too am like Bob, and Walt, in that I’m looking for the ultimate old man saw. I currently love my 346xp NE, and if it ever dies I’ll jump over to a 550xpg since the 50cc weight class is an ideal weight-to-power ratio for a firewood saw. However, I think some of the best weight savings is not so much in the saw but in these new lightweight bars. The laminates are good, but the Tsumura RW / Sugihara are really nice, they just cost so much! I’m debating trying the hydraulic punch press at work to make my own. Lol.

To go lighter, sub 50cc, I agree again with Bob: you give up a dose of power to save a little bit more in weight. I looked at some sub 50cc saws and I would consider a Stihl MS200, but I don’t love the top handle since I’m not a climber. I think they made a long body version, but I’m not sure.

Anyway, I’m digging this discussion, even if we are going off topic.
If that can punch some bars you might see a few show up in the mail lol.

It’ll punch a 3” hole through 3/8” plate steel, I know that. We have smaller punches too.

Sugihara makes a double punch and mills out a pocket to connect them on both sides.

Oregon just mills a long pocket out on both sides.

I don’t know if Tsumura is punching through, like Sugi, or just milling pockets like Oregon.

Husky: nix the 543xp and give us back an updated 242xp....pretty please!
Best answer?....they could do it if they wanted too, a 40ish CC revboost enhanced sub 9lb screamer that free revs @14k+. Vertical split mag case, nice spring AV and a decent filter. Damn is that too much too ask!

I don't think it's too much to ask at all.

And isn't the 543 a plastic case clamshell?? Been awhile since I've read up on or cared about the 543 so I forget

Ohhhhhhhhhh Boy! Looks like we're closer than I thought we were. :)
Bar and chain options is where I'll struggle a bit for this one. WANT a .404 sprocket so I can have a "modern" roller nose bar and something better than the mac Pin Tail...

Nice.
Their Is a Bridgeport at my job and it takes for ever milling a slot. Or I have no idea what I'm doing lol.

Yup and now Oregon got the weight message....with their laminated bars. AND Husqvarna is moving that direction in response. Both good options that won't break the bank. The Tsumara's with their "four" rivet sprockets didn't hold up to folks around here..:( Sugihara's do though. Just they got really expensive for a while. Wonder if they have come back to earth.....:) ALL those light bars have a place in OMS or CSS concepts!

Another conversation related is .325 vs. 3/8 to get a weight / performance / price ratio to enhance the OMS. I put on the Oregon as it's pretty capable! Plan to put a 9 pin on that setup. Then compare to UOMS II ( another 562 build in process) with a 18in Sugihara 3/8 setup. Any opinions?? Maybe other light & fast B&C options?

I think you'll like a .325 with a 9 tooth, I put that setup on my 2159 with a 20" versa cut and it is a nice set up. My 2159 isn't stock either

Walt, I haven’t heard any complaints about the Tsumura’s 4-pin rivets failing. I have heard good things about their RW bars, but I would think the fastest way to wear out a tip would be plunge cutting / bore cuts. Still, the whole point of a replaceable nose is that you CAN replace the tip, which isn’t possible on the laminate bars.

For sure .325 0.050 is lighter than 3/8 0.050, which is lighter than 3/8 0.063.

I had a few (8-10) go out to my folks I support, then the sprocket tips..then they quit taking them. Actually fine with me, I put the ones I have left on my Huztl saws and 562's! Of course most of what we have is hard wood here. Folks here find creative reasons to bore cut too it seems. Got that feed back from three folks, understand thats a small sample set but it was both quick and resolute. My Totals ( Tsumara's) are doing fine. But I'm neither as strong or as motivated as those who roasted the Tsumara's. Now Total is gone, and there is a new source of Sugi's for me so I don't really care. AND the new activity from Husqvarna and Oregon make it a moot point anyway..;)

I belive its a mag case, its the only good part the 543 has.

You are correct Tor. I just happened to get sent to GKS today with a shopping list for my work. I took the opportunity to check out the 543xp a little closer. It does have a mag case. Still like my 242 better though. ;)

My first saw was a Husqvarna 44 I still have it. It is quite a little powerhouse for what it was. I'm not to familiar with the 242 other than knowing it was an XP pro saw. Are there any similarities in the two?
