I have never used a top handle saw. I dont really have a want for one but am thinking of getting a small compact saw to keep in a tool box or be able to carry on a tractor easily, etc.

Other than climbing or that fact that it has a smaller footprint is there a reason to get a top handle over the rear handle?

I figure if small transport size is really needed I could just remove the bar.

Thanks for any input

My little echo is awesome for trimming small stuff and cutting firewood splits down that are an inch or two too long for my stove. That would be a lot harder and more dangerous with a rear handle imo.

If you ever stand on the tractor bucket to cut low limbs. Pretty obvious the use for a top handle. If not a rear handle can be had a lot cheaper.

Oh yeah, forgot about 1 handed use. Not that I would recommend it to anyone but I have had to one hand a rear handle. I could see the benefit moving the handle closer to the bar. Maybe I should just get a top handle and trade it down the road if I dont like it.

I didnt realize there was a notable price difference between the 201t and 201c, thanks.

Battery saws are pretty nice as ride-alongs. No need to carry a gas can and a lot less to go wrong. The top handle battery saws can be spendy and gutless though.

I'm leaning towards a top handle. It will likely be a couple months before I get one (still waiting on 2 others to get ported) but I like the idea of 1 handed use. Plus I doubt itd be hard to get rid of a 201t if I decided I wanted to part ways.

Thanks for all the input and feel free to keep it coming.

I see you listed Stihl saws in your thread title. Are you looking at Stihl only. Or are you open to other brands?

Stihl only. Not that I am brand biased, loyal or otherwise but I spend a lot of money with my local John Deere dealer. They are also a stihl dealer. I tend to end up with a new saw or 2 each year courtesy of John Deere depending on how much new equipment I buy. . . .

Wow!!! Very nice. I personally would go with the top handle for an ATV Saw. 201T...

Every time I’ve tried to keep a saw on a piece of equipment, it ends up getting banged up. For that reason I’d get something cheaper than a 201. But if they’re just giving em away.....nice!

If I had it ported is would be mastemind. He's ported all my saws for the last 8ish years. Lots of good porters here for sure but I am a creature of habit and if it aint broke dont fix it type so he'd port the 201 IF I had it ported. I may leave it stock minus a MM and timing advance.

We keep Echo top handles in the tractors. Great for getting those overhanging limbs or that tree that fell on a field road. They fit behind the seat pretty snug and don’t bounce around too much. I built an aluminum box for the open station 5115M that mounts to the loader frame. It has a lot more wear and tear from bouncing around in it. I wouldn’t let a 201T ride like that, lol.

That’s 80 percent of the gains anyway. Enjoy the 201t. The newest version is a top notch saw!

201’s are real nice saws too bad they got such a bad reputation out of the gate. Other option for a tractor saw is a ms 194t with a timing advance and muffler mod doesn’t have the 201’s power but they’re 350 ish new and if you bounce off tractor and run over your out 1/2 the money or a bit less. The 194 still cuts pretty well got one few weeks ago for my birthday and have dealt with several 193/194’s for the tree services and they actually hold up real well to daily use.
