You'd have to punch the rivets out from the inside if the case is split .

Ernie

I think on the 2188 you just pull the muffler and knock the rivets out from behind with a pin punch.

If you remove the muffler and look at the back side where the tag is mounted, you should see the ends of the rivets.

I'd have to go look but I'm fairly certain they are in the oil reservoir.
Edit:
They are outside the case as said.

Yep, looks like you can get to them once the muffler is removed. I have done it myself, they’ll pop out. If you can think of it , back up the punch to prevent the rivets from damaging the tag. Put some masking tape over the back side of a small socket and set the opening over the rivet head. Now with your third hand hold it firmly against the tag whilst you tap out the rivets.
Works every time.

They actually aren't visible from the back side as the case isn't punched threw behind the rivets ..it's solid . The case would have to be drilled out to be able to get a punch on the rivet from the back .
I'm still looking for a tag if anyone has one .

I have drilled to get to them. The mfg. doesn’t want it to be too easy to swap tags. I guess on that case it’s not possible. That’s too bad.

Here’s one I drilled,I think. I can’t believe I dug this out, my shots aren’t up to date. It’s a 372 OE that came in a few years ago. IMG_5974.jpeg

Anyone have the cooling shield that goes between the muffler and cylinder on an Ms 391 Stihl ? MS311 I believe is the same. Also does anyone know off hand if an exhaust gasket is supposed to be there also? I am thinking not.
I have chainsaw parts to trade or paper funds.

I’m afraid I don’t have the part, but, In my experience, the cooling shield goes directly on the cyl with a gasket between it and the muffler. It conducts heat straight off the exhaust port into the cooling airstream. Very important part. Without it, you will see heat damage start to appear on the exhaust side of the piston very early, eventually leading to stuck rings and failure.

Appreciate that info .
Lots of these must go bad . Seems to be a short supply of these for this model. The local dealer told me they would have to order and $10 for the part + $9 for shipping charge is regardless. I bought a muffler with 1 included but it was cracked clear to the exhaust port. eBay seller claimed the crack shouldn't affect it's function.🙄 At his rate I am going to have 2 times the money in the muffler then had I bought the muffler here. Baited me with his exhaust shield, and obviously doesn't care the time and money it cost me.
