Finally got it completed minus decals. IMG_20240427_004732506.jpgNew tank vent included a new tank. Had a batch of Rit dye mixed up so thought why not? While waiting on the tank I ported the cylinder. Just need to find some big wood and see what she'll do.

Well, now you tell me 🙄
I ordered one of Sawzilla’s cover assemblies to try. Didn’t even think of a 395 flag.
I do have a 395 on the way here from Bill G so will check it out.
I may be wrong, I didn't think there were different plastic flags for 288's. I know the 395 flags were the ticket to putting a full-wrap on a 272, but I'm not confident on 288's.

Yup, same flag for 288 and 395. But, I honk too short for the wrap.
I’ll pull off the flag from the 395 (regular handle) I got the other day and try it on the 288 cover.
I still can’t find a part# for any of the longer flags. I have them for my 2100 and 268 with wraps so I know they exist.

I took a chance on the sawzilla cover and it works well enough. Plenty of room for a thick gloved hand which what I had didn’t provide. The band was a little tweeked and wouldnt quite fit over the drum but a bit of persuation with a sm hammer got it closer to round.1000003938.jpg1000003939.jpg1000003936.jpg

Well, got the Beast out today to try on site 3. (Poplar, Cottonwood, pulp trees to 36”, mostly pushed over by excavator) Took a while for the rebuilt oiler to kick in but it did. Cut a couple trees off their stumps, throwing huge chips, and it started to sputter…and die. My buddy agreed…fuel starved.
So, will pull the carb and all fuel lines and look for suspects.
Saw is nice but a bit heavy compared to other saws in the same category.
It will probably go on the shelf…after fixing…and await keep or sell.
The 31” 404 seems to be a good combo for it.

Well…figured out why the Beast wouldn’t run right.
Had it in the log pile to test yesterday and made a few cuts then it sputtered and died. Would idle but not rev. Grabbed another saw to finish up for the day.
Today, pulled fuel filter, replaced; ran the fuel line…ok. Pulled carb and disassembled…all good, no obstruction. Figured I’d try another carb, just in case and noticed the impulse hole on the carb didn’t match that of the block still on the cyl.
Oops…I had put the block in upside down when I replaced the carb last time 😳
Big question is how the hell did it run at all, lol
All good now, a real beast and with full tanks is nearly 26# 🤣

Is there not an AM bigger than 288 bore cylinder?

@Duke Thieroff
Think of the 288 as a big bore 281, just like a 272, it's a big bore 268. Husqvarna has done all the big bore work for you. I believe the cylinder skirts need to have some meat left on the bone if they are to retain their cylindrical shape and stuffs.
Good news is there's still the 395...
