I have only read about milling, and not very much to be honest. I had a guy bring me a saw to repair the other day, and he said he planned to use it for blocking. The saw is a Homelite Super Wiz 66 with a 30" bar and 1/2" Poulan chain with a 10 stamped on it. I don't know much about this milling process, but I am sure he will tire of this saw quickly. He was looking a some of my saws and asking how they would do milling. Which, if any, of the following saws would be the best - or most suitable for milling? Jonsereds 801, 90, Stihl 038 Mag, Homelite SXL 925, Husqvarna 272?

Do you think that Super Wiz will do well with milling? Being a gear drive and a low rpm saw to start with, I figured it would be painfully slow.

Honestly I would use the 90. The 801 and 90 are essentially the same saw so you spares if anything breaks, it has the highest displacement and AV system. Also the oil and fuel caps are on the side of the saw making fueling easier mid cut, the homelites cannot be refueled on the side. Old jonsereds probably not ideal for milling but that would be my choice pout of those options.

What affordable and relatively common saws are best for milling? He don't want to fork out the cash to buy my Jonsered 2095 Turbo, which is most likely the best saw I have for milling.

Other than you want the biggest one you can get your hands on, the one saw that comes to mind to fit your criteria would be a Husqvarna 288XP. Lots of old ones out there that are affordable and parts are available.

Depends on what you consider affordable haha. I use an 066 because it's a good mix of speed and torque, parts are abundant and it's easy to work on. In my neck of the woods 066's are very common and most people aren't asking an arm and leg for one.

I am the only one near me that I know of with a 288. It ain't going anywhere... 066's are fairly rare around here, and command big bucks...

(Many) use ALL of those, I believe for milling

Do milling saws get beat up or tend to stay more clean than a felling/bucking saw? Just curious if it's worth it to buy a pretty saw

I've used a 390xp and they work well, but bigger is better. Also consider anti-vibe and use a smooth saw if you are going to mill for hours on end.

I refuel running a lot of times to let the saw cool down some. I usually refuel after every cut unless they're real short.

To refuel while running is EXTREME risk of fire. JUST GAS VAPORS CAN IGNITE off a hot cylinder. I do believe in idling 20-60-seconds after milling before shutdown for cooling, but never fuel running

I have tried refueling when running ,if go to the top it shakes too much and the fuel splashes all over ,i can only fill till an inch or so below the cap when running ,it is hard to get the screw cap started also from the saw vibrating .I just kill the engine now ,because i do the bar oil at the same time .
