Which Chain

Hi Everyone

I want a new chain for an 18" 3/8 .58 bar.
The chains main task will be to cut through a bunch of 3-4- and 5 inch logs
stacked in a frame, 3 logs wide by 5 logs high.
Unfortunately the logs may have grit or dust on them from laying up before
cutting so Semi Chisel will be better suited.
The saw will be a Makita 7900.

It would be good to hear your views on the Stihl RM, Semi Chisel
The Oregon 73DPX Semi Chisel
OR
The Oregon 73LPX Full Chisel
The Oregon 73LPX Full Chisel which is similar but has bumpers to try an combat kick back.
OR
Carlton A2LM Full Chisel
Carlton A2LM-BL which is the same chain with bumpers,
Carlton A2EP Semi Chisel with no bumpers.

I'm of the opinion that a Semi chisel will cut only a little slower and thus
not hold up the sawing process too much, but I am always open to correction
and would appreciate feed back from people who have used any of the chains
above in similar situations, or indeed any other recommendation for a chain.

Thanks & Regards, john

The stihl rm holds up well I've used the Carlton chisel chain it's my favorite 3/8 chain. Any of them will do. For the dirty logs I'd go semi chisel for sure. I use mostly semi chisel it sharpens really easy with a file also.

Hi jakethesnake

Have you ever used the 3/8 Carlton Semi Chisel A2EP chain, if not, what Semi do you use in 3/8.

Thanks for posting, john

Nah I haven't tried the 3/8 Carlton semi I have some Oregon in 3/8 semi that holds up pretty decent. If I was going to buy a loop it would be Carlton I have Carlton semi in 325 it's good stuff I'd bet the 3/8 is real good

I'll agree with the others, I'm a semi chisel fan as well. Either the DPX or A2EP should cut great. I have loops in 73DP and a reel of A2EP but haven't tried them yet. But based on my .325 experiences with dirty wood semi chisel is the way to go.

Having experienced many times how quickly, and precipitously, full-chisel can go dull in clean wood, I'm a convert to semi-chisel, and for all purposes from felling/bucking/limbing to milling. Found it to be way more durable than full-chisel, making momentary speed difference meaningless to me. Currently spinning up Bailey's 30SC, which would be the garden-variety Carlton 3/8" .050". Full-skip version of that is now my chain-of-choice for milling with Dolly 6100 24" or Husqy 576 32".
Been learning how to deal properly with depth gauges, finding Husqy kit quick, cheap and dirty way to help saw to take bigger bites happily. Got a few loops of Oregon LGX to use up/barter/sell.
