A guy I work with kept telling me about this chain he has. He finally brings it in today. What the heck is it? The angles look like a milling chain. What are the things between the cutters?

Yes, Kolve chain.
Cool chain.

Sharpen it, cut with it and make a video, take pictures of the chips. ;)

The side cutters looking like horns are supposed to cut the fibers and the regular looking cutters are lifting the chips out.
It was intended to make a faster, cleaner cut or something like that.

@Philbert wrote an assay about Kolve chain, interesting read.

I have one myself but they aren't the best cutters . I think it was on a right hand start 10 -10 McCulloch .It's on a nail in the garage .I'll see if it says anything on it .

They were also referred to as ‘Mount Saint Helen’s’ chains’, and there are conspiracy stories that these were the next best thing to the ‘hundred mile per gallon carburetors,‘ but they were ‘banned by OSHA’.

Lots of things have been tried, and some things might work in very specific circumstances. These show up every now and then.

Not to skew off too badly but about that same time Oregon had 1/4" chain both full comp chisel and skip .It was the cats meow on trim saws like the Poulan S 25 DA I still own .Ralph Nadar who was trying to protect ourselves from ourselves had it removed from the market .He claimed small cube saw were only used in a non pro user thing and as such were not safe .Ralph must have caught somebody in a compromising situation with a goat or something because nearly every thing he didn't like was outlawed

The closest I could find on Mike Acres site was made by Atlas which is similar .However it was listed as some off the wall .311 pitch circa 1968 . Listed as B 50 W .It obviously was not successful .

Kolve was supposed to be very good for use in dirty wood, in addition it is relatively easy to sharpen since everything is filed at 90 degrees to the bar. Kolve did not want to develop the low kick-back features so they just quit making chain. I have a nice loop that I have made a few cuts with and it does leave a very nice, smooth finish.

I also have some of the Atlas in .404 skip, the wing cutters are one piece and split rather than being made in two pieces like the Kolve. I can't find any photos of the Atlas right now.
