A VFD basically works by changing AC to DC then making a variable frequency AC out put .I've never repaired or built one but I have installed several in an industrial setting . They work to a point but best on AC motors designed for inverter duty . Generally speaking a standard duty AC motor not so designed will experience over heating at lower than base speeds of operation for any length of time .
