I was wondering if any of you have bought used chainsaws online from places like ebay or craigslist and is it wise to do so? I recently saw a STIHL MS362C for $99 dollars. The seller has a 99.4% positive rating. Photos in link below...

What do you guys think?

I've bought a saw or two from forum members and f-b marketplace. Some projects, some runners. I've been pleasantly surprised with some and bit in the ass with others. Buy your used stuff here, from respected members and I think you'll be good to go.

Do any of you have any experience with the clones (Farmmac, Neo-Tec, Holzfforma) and how have they stood up?
Some are great, some not so good. Neotec has good customer service. I have several clones. There are many discussions on here about them. The Amazon top handle clones are good. I've done nothing to it but tune it and run it.

Very limited experience having only bought one clone saw the G444 as its a clone of my all-time favorite Stihl 044 which I still have.

Echo Stihl Husqvarna surprisingly if running a 70cc saw I more often than not grab the G444.
I went in knowing the risk but I had an extra $300 to throw away in a worst case scenario and would probably do again if the need arose and I had an extra $300 to gamble, since that purchase I have also purchased new Echo and Husqvarna's for different reasons which had nothing to do with my experience with the G444.

At present it is -3F as soon as it warms up a bit 0F I am heading out to do a bit of cutting 044 Arctic and a 572XPG if the G444 had heated handles I might be more inclined to grab it. ;) :sisi1

Is it a safer bet to buy a new Chinese clone (Farmmac, Neo-Tec, Holzfforma) than a used Stihl?
Depends on who you ask. There is a thread on this site that discusses Chinese clones, part of the thread is memes and advertisements that use bad translating services (like promoting a "quenching bar"). That said, there are several members here who have clone saws and they work out really great - especially since there is a huge aftermarket with inexpensive parts.

One thing that might help out is to let the forum know what size saw you are looking for (I am assuming 362 size with mtronic - or auto tune on comparable Husky). People here are always selling saws and you can get all the way from parts, to project saw, to good running saw, up to fully ported saw. Again depends on what you are looking for. I have not found any deals on FaceBook Marketplace here in my area, but that isn't to say they are not out there. One thing with eBay is while the bid or buyout price is great, also check out the shipping cost too.

Most of my saws have been project saws, ones I found at the dump, antique store or from a dealer and a few from here on the forum. The few I have gotten from forum members here have been exactly if not better than advertised, they are willing to tell you about any missing or broken parts or any issues they are aware of. I bought one with a seized piston due to one of the rings falling apart...did not know the extent of the damage, but the seller had told me about it and provided pictures. Some of these saws I only had to pay shipping for. I think you will find people here in the forum very forthcoming with information about saws they are selling.

I just bought a $200 tool from a guy here on the forum, I started looking a few months back and didn't have the money for it at the time. He offered to send me the tool to try. I was able to recently buy the tool and it came as advertised and fit to the saw I am working on (Stihl 034) but should fit up to a whole mess of saws I work on. Very good experience, I am very happy.

As for Chinese saws...I want to get one too, been watching for a Hnsvarqua 372, some of the Farmertec kits look like fun, getting all the parts and then putting it together like a model airplane!!

I got the Hnsvarqua 372 from aliexpress for 150 delivered. I haven't used it much yet but it runs good. I plugged the decomp because it was leaking pretty bad. The starter rope has not wanted to retract a couple times. I haven't checked it out yet, but I'm happy with it so far.

I used to fly R/C airplanes and build kits during the winter to kill time. I am kind of liking your idea of building a saw from kit for a winter project. now which one maybe a Pro with upgraded Meteor piston and Caber rings, something else to waste time and money on Thanks or maybe not;)

I'm not sure where in MN you are, but I'd bet that there's a dealer or small engine shop within your normal travels that has a broken/abandoned/customer didn't want to fix non-China saw that could be had for a song. You could reduce it to a pile of parts and have something with a lot lower risk level to build. If you really wanted to be cheap you could use the cheap parts to rebuild it and still come out with less into it.

Oh my goodness wow! Fwee beewoah! U are such a brave soul. I shall name u: Xtra Power-G-dawg-Arctic

I wouldn't even turn on carb heat/handle heat at -3.

There's some really nice deals on negotiated timber sales right now. Spot I'm trying to contract is a cold hole today. If u want to cut in some real MS negative 044 arctic kinda territory:

I have never bought a chainsaw from eBay, but I wouldn’t be afraid to. EBay is usually easy to work with for returns if the item is not as described, even if the seller doesn’t accept returns. Only problem is shipping on larger items like that, sometimes it’s not worth it.
