I know this is bizare, but I was using a worn .325 chain and noticed a lot of metal on the bottom of the cutter and started thinking . Clean the gullet. I wondered what a 3/8 file would do to it. So I took a couple swipes on the cutter. It looked pretty good. I put it in some wood and it was taking some decent chips out. When I was done cutting today, I put the chain in my vise and took a few more swipes off each cutter. It looks and feels very sharp!
Has anyone else ever tried this? I know I sound stupid, but.... I love to try different things. Lol
On a side note, a while ago I sharpened my 3/8 chain by accident with a .325 file setup. I did not realize it until I went to touch up the chain again. I had an oh sh!t moment. But, that 3/8 chain cut like a hot knife through butter. I subsequently went back to using my 3/8 file setup. But.....

Here is a pic of the .325 cutter sharpened with a 3/8 file.

If you used the .325 file it would get the gullet out a bit more. Bet the 3/8 file works ok for first few filings then the .325 file is better fit as the tooth gets smaller. Farther back you file the tooth the smaller it gets and higher the raker gets.

Yup. I think your right Mason. It looks like it's almost square. Lol
I think the .325 file will make the tooth a bit sharper and thinner.

I think 7/32, standard 3/8 file. I don't buy those Stihl special files.
I used the 7/32 file on a .325 chain. Lol

You think it should work Keith? I am just screwing around with different ideas when I see possibilities. Lol.
More experimental than anything. That bigger surface area on the cutter loaded up the saw for sure. It was cutting chips like a 3/8 chain.

Yes it will work, but most likely wo t be ideal. Angle under the top plate will be rather blunt.

Yup. That's kind of what I thought after looking at the cutters. The smaller file makes the top plate thinner as well as the side plate. I will give it another go and try it. Then probably use the correct file. Lol

Cool. Thanks, I will look for them and try them out. I'll grab a box. One better than the other?

There was quite a bit of the 7/32 file above the tooth. The 3/16 is probably better. Put a sharper angle on the underneath of the top plate.
