I am looking for the upper upper drive shaft for a Troy-Bilt TB475SS trimmer, this is the piece of shaft in the upper drive shaft housing on a unit with the EZ-Link coupler system. I know there are quite a few different models that will interchange, I think the only stipulation is that the unit be equipped with the coupler.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

The end in the clutch is the conventional 1/4" square, the opposite end is a 1/4" female to accept the 1/4" square male end of the attachment. The problem with the original is the square female receptical is wallowed out and no longer driving the attachment.

Could you shim it with some cheap feeler gauges cut into strips?

That would be possible if you were to make the tool one dimensional with a fixed attachment. To be able to switch attachments (I routinely use the edger and cultivator, occasionally use it with a straight shaft trimmer...) the upper end of the drive shaft needs the female/square fitting to accept the square drive end of the attachment.
