Got a 359 Randy ported back in 2012 for me. I don't use it often but i drain the gas and oil when not in use. Around 2013-14 it was acting up and Randy fixed/replaced the carb. Has the Walbro on it. Bout a week ago i got it out and it fired up. Ran it a few minutes and started slowing down. It would only run if i kept the gas going but died if left to idle.

I figured carb again so i bought a rebuild kit. Installed it and it wouldnt crank/run. Took the carb back off and realized i had gotten the intake gasket smushed up front on the carb. Figured that was it so i ordered another gasket. Put it on today and also replaced fuel filter. It only took a couple pulls on choke and it cranked but immediately rev'ed high. I flipped it off choke and it immediately dies. Can turn around crank again on choke, revs high and it will die immediately again once off choke. Like i hit the kill switch.

I dont have a tester to see if the carb leaks. I'm wondering if im getting a tight enough seal between the carb and intake. The intake is plastic and you cant crank down or you can mess it up installing the two bolts that hold it together. I'm wondering if the accelerator pump that has gone bad on these Walbro's may be bad.
What issues should i be looking at that would cause it to crank and rev high on choke but die when taken off choke?

Would a leaking carb cause it or would even crank with a leaking carb?

Pull the carb back off and get some pictures of the intake, and that gasket you're talking about please.

Here’s the pics. One of the intake. One of the screwed up gasket that got squished and the new one I tried.

Reason for squished one is I had the carb mounted in the rubber holders and thought it had to be lined up perfect before installing two bolts. Then I watched some you tube videos and realized you can move it up some out of the rubber mounts to get access to the bolts which is what I did.

That gasket goes behind the carburetor. Between it and the air filter base.

You mean like this? So there’s no gasket where the carb attaches to the intake?

Lol... you mean you don’t make that mistake often?

I did put it on right. Went to pulling and it locked up. Removed clutch and found this. So I have to get one of these before I move forward

Ok, im doing better. Took the carb back off. Took the other carb rebuild kit(bought 2) and replaced the metering diaphragm and the clear diaphragm. Got it back together and it's at least idling and not going dead. Going to adjust the idle, high low after i watch some videos. I ordered another plastic oil gear thingy drive. I don't wanna run it without the clutch and stuff on cause i figured it aint good for it?

Good thing is i can take a carb off a 357/359 in about 5 seconds now.

No problem to run it with out a clutch but you'll want to have a cutting attachment on for a final tune so you might as well wait.

Yeah, i would really like a tach but the better ones are 100 bucks and i cant see me using one enough to justify it. Thought i might try one of the cheaper ones on Amazon but i don't know. I screwed the H-L all the way in and backed out 1 1/4 turn to start with. I'll read up on it and play around once that oil gear thingy comes in. I also found my needle bearing i lost on the floor of my shed. Looked all around and couldn't find it. Finally pulled my 4 wheelers inside and as i was shutting the door there it was in plain sight smushed where i ran over it with the 4wheeler.

Also looking at one of those Mity Vac pressure/vacuum testers.

Well finally got everything and bought a cheap Chinese tach. It seemed to take a bit to crank and idle at first. It would idle and slowly the tach would show RPMs dropping until it went dead. Messed with idle then low, high tune and now it seems to idle. Used it about 30 minutes cutting a big log in the yard and it seems to be working fine. I turned it off a couple times and waited a few minutes and it fired right up. Gonna play with it tomorrow some more and hopefully i have it fixed.
