Traded a ms361 and a 365 xtorq for it yesterday. Came across the saw and it was low usage with original 28 inch bar. The build quality on this saw is amazing. I think I’m going to be happy with this one

Cool beans right there. So I'm guessing you needed a big saw?:beer-toast1:

Nice score on the 660 looks mint.
Spec it up to a true magnum and dump the epa muffler and unleash the beast!
Just bolt the mag muffler on and don't gut (cut the baffle out) or it will be way to loud if you are actually going to run the saw for any length of time. that's my 2c anyway.

The stock muffler has a circular hole and a slit port that appears factory on the muffler body behind the front cover. There is a baffle inside. I thought of just cutting out the front plate of the baffle and making factory exhaust hole bigger like I did on my old 026. Would cutting the front plate of the baffle off help or make it too loud? I know I can just get a dual port front cover and drill factory hole bigger. On the Australian muffler I thought the inside didn't have a baffle like the 044?

I think the USA muffler has an 8mm side outlet the Aussie 660 has 12mm or bigger I don't remember exactly.
The slit is stock on both mufflers.
Yes the mag mufflers have a baffle it depends if you like really loud saw's or not most on here do lol
I didn't like the noise I cut the baffle out of a stock mag muffler with dual port front cover I also opened up the side outlet way bigger I could only put up with it for about a week and had to go back to a stock muffler with baffle and I always wear earmuffs using a saw.
I also felt it made the saw a little gutless with the baffle cut out and side outlet opened up it lost some torque thats for sure but that was just my experience in my part of the world with my saw on a given day in the timer I was cutting.
Yeah you could make the outlet bigger then the stock EPA pea hole and just get a dual port front cover.
We were lucky down here they didn't mess with our 660's they stayed the same right up to the end no chocked up EPA crap on paper Stihl say 7.1hp for the Aussie ms660 only .1 or .2hp less than a 661 but the 660 is a better saw for hardwoods in my opinion with it's heavier clutch.
it's to easy to get a 661 chain to stop dead and clutch slip! cutting hardwood here for me lol.
This pic is of one of the last Aussie ms660 mags before the 661 came in.

I’ll leave my baffle alone then if it gave yours less power. If I do anything to it probably just dual port front cover and open up hole under deflecter a little. Thanks for your experience with your saw

I've got a nice fairly low hour MS660 Mag. Dang they are tough saws, maybe not the smoothest latest greatest saw but a good saw, easy to work on, tons of parts options both OEM & AM. At one stage I was gonna sell it & get a 661 which I'm kinda glad I didn't. The OP looks like he done well!

It may be a dumb question..but does a 660 clutch work on a 661 ? .. I thought I saw it mentioned on here a while back but I can't remember.

I would rather have these than a 661. They will probably last longer and be less trouble if keeping for years. The older stihls just keep going. Im not worried about the vibration being more cause I wont be running this only on occasional time I need it.

Yeah the old style 660 heavy clutch shoes fit the 661 it's a good mod makes the 661 into a 660 has some balls to keep pulling the chain without any clutch slip.
Only problem is finding one of the old style heavy 066/660 clutches new.
The last of the ms660 Stihl put the light ms661 clutch shoes in them they must of been testing the lighter clutch in a proven platform?
Anyways I've tried ordering 066 and 660 clutches through the dealer's here and the crapy light clutch is what turns up.
Dealer says that's all you can get new part number superseeds the old part numbers.
None of this matters if you are cutting softer species of timer the lighter clutch is fine saw's spool up faster to.

Cut the end off the baffle and open the stock port. It’s free and it’s not too much exhaust outlet.

I've never weighed them but there is a big difference. The stiffer 661 springs engage the shoes at higher rpm as well that adds to the slipping when revs are pulled down.
