What do i need to cut square holes into beams that will make a nice square hole ? Like the old timers used to do ,working with 6x12 sized timbers ,am thinking maybe join the beams together and dowl them if it is not too time consuming .

I've seen Chain trencher attachments before now for a saw that bolt onto it and allow you to plunge cut your mortise

Chain mortiser if you have money but not time to spend. figure 1700 for the mortiser, another 350 or so each for the chains.

Brace and bit or a tee-handle auger, some decent mortising chisels and a mallet, if you got time and energy to spend. The price of a Mortiser covers a LOT of decent quality chisels!

If you want not too time consuming, look hard at the steel brackets that are sold for timber framing without too much joinery required.
