I built a 461 for a logger... and that led to doing his 462 and then a 460.... I can say with 100% absolute that This was the worst Stihl 460 I had ever worked on... he said it ran up until it didn't. Well Yep.
Said it has compression... well, it has resistance... coil was fried, piston and cylinder was toast, crank was purple, clutch was purple, bearings and seals were shot, carb was clogged, start pawls, recoil, drum and bearing shot, case was junk... I told him that he'd be into it over $800 in parts etc. He said, "nah, keep it for parts"... 😒🧐... well, I had 2 other junk 460s.. so, I grabbed every part that looked like it had some life to it... and started game planning.

It supposedly ran until the coil burnt up??? Ummmm, if so, that would be a testament... I think.

So, more to this build, they say the devil is in the details... To add to the story of this build, he acquired this saw from a guy who owed him some money, I believe for wood.. (I could be wrong)... so, the guy didn't have all of the money and he offered him this saw to settle the debt. Said it ran until it didnt... assuming the coil went... he took the saw for the remaining debt and it sat for 2yrs. This where i come into the picture with the 461, 462 etc... like mentioned, he asked if I could check it out and pep it up. After I notified him of the grim outlook I asked him if he would like me to toss it into a box and drop off one day after work... he said "nah, keep it for parts"... now, this guy is a straight shooter, I could tell he was upset about the situation... this guy would do just about anything for the people he let's into his circle... I've done business with him, mainly purchasing Cows/Angus etc... I can vouch that he's a stand-up guy... idk about you guys, but the older i get, the more i pay attention to how people are and it bothers me to see people upset... people have forgotten how to repsect and treat others.. people have become callus to others, that's not good. One night I was sitting at the bench and I'm looking at the pile of stihl saws... 460s, 440, 400, 009L, 020av, 500i, 462... I obviously didn't need the parts/junk saws... so I used what I had to build him a running saw... he offered to pay and I declined. I told him one hand washes the other... seems like that principle/ideology only resides in select groups of people who hold value to.... and it's those people that we as humans should back 100%.

Damn, soapbox moment... 🤣🤣😬😬

I've done a few 046/460's and they run well, people like them, but I always felts they were a little lazy. They just didn't have the RPM in the cut I'd like and they were a little slow to accelerate.

I recently did a 440/046 hybrid and that thing was spicy! Everything I thought was missing from the 046.

Interesting perspective. I’ve always felt my 460 was great, a little slower revving like you said, but I can really lean on that sucker before it clutches out compared to my other saws.

Sure the 460's had great power and you could really be aggressive with them. I just wanted them to cut at a little higher RPM.

I Absolutely 100% agree. Off throttle they lack as well as in the cut... I feel for a 77cc saw they should grunt more and be a bit more responsive. For the 70cc class... I think Stihl got it right with the 461s. I have a cylinder and piston to do a big bore 440... I'm looking fwd to comparing the 2 saws.

Same. I don't miss the revs because the torque gets the job done for me everytime.

Although the first thing I noticed about my 500i was definitely the throttle response. Much faster to rev than my 046.

A guy brought me 2 MS460's that had been run over by a skidsteer. Both low hour saws and run over at different times but had almost identical significant damage. Eventually fixed both of them with mostly Asian plastics.

I liked the hybrid I ran, but as soon as the chain touched any dirt game over. I don't run dull chains but I also don't want to swap/file a chain every time there's a bit of dirt splatter on the bark.

Some saws are definitely more sensitive to this, than others..

I haven’t noticed laziness with the 460. They usually have the non-dummy coil. Maybe they malfunction and stay retarded longer than they need to?

They certainly are a strange bird. They like different port timing than other saws I’ve done. The best one I did will out rev and out cut a hybrid. Weighs a pound or 2 more than a hybrid, but everything is bigger and stronger on it, has better oiler and better liquid capacity over the 44.

If you took 40 thou out of the band, I am unsure why you’d need a popup piston. You’re probably around 200 psi with a flat top.
