The MS261 Muffler

I've seen lots of different ways to do these mufflers. Of course.......I have settled on a way I like. Figured I'd share.

I'm not too fond of either of these.

This is how I do em.

I start with 24ga sheet steel.

The 288 deflector is out of place here.


I use a little vice in another small vice to bend the metal up in.

Flattening it some after cutting it out.


First bend.


Second bend.....

Now the other side.



Test fit.



Rivet nuts and a nice sized hole.



Ready to install......


And done.

I haven't opened up a ms261 muffler yet. What's inside the muffler? Any baffles or tubes or is it just an empty can?

There's a tube that feeds the factory opening. It's tough to see.......and tough to be sure it's de-burred well. That's the reason I elect to go this route.

I've done a bunch of those and the 550XPs. No cat in the muffler. It's got a lot of crap inside it though. I use a brazed on deflector on those.

Are you brazing the two back seams shut on them defectors?

No problems with the gas coming out the back of them?

I never have........I figure the path of least resistance will be followed. That......and they are tightly touching. lol

Not at all. I use a kit from McMaster Carr. The nuts are thin flange 4mm steel inserts.

Don't forget the 4mm mandrel and nosepiece.

I use a 4mm button head allen type fastener too.

I was gonna do a thread on porting a MS200T........but I got tunnel vision and forgot to take any pictures after it was apart. I'm putting it back together now. lol

It's almost as if good builders talk to each other about good ways to do these things. When I first got mine back I was mildly disappointed that it wasn't brazed but then remembered they are stainless...



When you think about it there are so many reasons this makes sense. Just think how easy this screen is to clean when needed...
