Wonder how this happened. New loop of chain, first time on the grinder. Driver link was backwards also. From now on I will be sure to check each cutter and driver link when putting on a new chain.

You will also notice a poorly spun rivet to the right of the backwards cutter.

Thanks to a box of spare chain parts and a spinner & breaker, problem solved.

Yep, I cleaned up the chain prior to sharpening.

How long did you cut with it before you realized a cutter was backwards?

Less than 10 minutes. At full throttle the saw was "chattering" a bit, just enough to notice. Likely a combination of the backwards cutter and the backwards driver.

I was milling with the 895 Mac. 404 chain, ripping grind. All that dirt on the chain is pitch from the Douglas Fir.

Probably not factory done, but by someone who had their fingers in it along the way.

I got one like that with a ‘new’ loop of Oregon Chain once off eBay. Turns out the seller bought a ‘close out’ of a shop, and there was a reason that loop was unsold.

Not a big deal if you can break and spin, but can be a surprise.
