I'll continue using free new engine oil / ATF.
I can't stand the smell of ATF and despised working on saws where people use it....blech!! 🤣

My neighbor uses used motor oil and that just makes a mess out of the entire unit!

I get what your saying but I don't think the tackifier is going to give you the extra "protection" to make up for a dull chain.
I know I said 50 gallons of bar oil in the last five years but thinking more on it I bet I've used closer to 75-80 gallons in 5 years.

It’s true that tackifier isn’t adding to the lubricity, but it should help the oil to stick to the chain until it reaches the underside of the bar. I wasn’t trying to say that tackifier will make up for a dull chain; but that’s the situation where differences in oil will be more obvious.

I'm about 99% sure that Rural King brand oils are made by Citgo, which is good stuff. I would advise against used crankcase oil even if diluted with clean oil. Used motor oil is full of acids and combustion byproducts, not to mention tiny metal particles. SAE 10 or 20 machine oil is fairly cheap and would be much better for that purpose, or mix in 10-30% clean diesel or kerosene. I believe Stihl actually recommends the latter for winter use.
I believe it was Rural King that came up #1 in one of Project Farms tests about a year or so back.

It does not.
Over the last 5 years (since bar oil became ridiculously expensive) I've used new engine oil of every weight imaginable and ATF, I get it for free. I haven't noticed any excessive bar or chain wear. Using probably 50 gallons of it so far it's worked just fine and saved me a lot of money.
I was paying roughly $3 gallon for bar oil back in the late 80 early 90s now I am paying roughly $6 gallon on sale at TSC which seems reasonable to me, I dont cut as much as I did back in the day only going through about gallon a week avg now.

That has gotta be a typo, that is twice as much as a gallon of their fuel!! I will stick with HK 2 gallon BC oil for $17.00... 🤣
Nope. Our local HW store just started selling Stihl products in direct competition to my regular dealer two blocks away.

It depends on how much stress the chain is under. For someone running a dull chain, I’m sure more tack is better. For those of us that are OCD about sharp chains, almost any lubricant is sufficient.
I almost think a thinner lube penetrates to the chain pins and roller better. The rails themselves are harder than the chain and dont require much if any lube.

Im cheap in regards to bar oil and have run a variety of things in a pinch. Including two cycle oil, hydraulic fluid, ATF, engine oil and turbine oil. If its free or cheap I will use it.
One thing I won't use is used engine oil. I really dont like the idea of breathing aerosolized oil thats a known carcinogen.

In 50+ years of cutting I have never had a chain that the drivers or links wore out before the cutters regardless of the oil I was running.

Same here. But I am constantly shortening chains for customers, not because the oilers aren't working, but because they insist on cutting until the chain won't make dust anymore.

That's way cheaper than even the cheapest store brand motor oil here.

78 cord felled and bucked. 75% of the cutting was with supertech bar oil. Its an EXCELLENT bar oil. Our chains/bars are in good shape.
Chain n bars were: 620PW: 24" versacut bar with EXL

CS 4910PW: 20" oregon speedcut .325 narrow kerf with 23 rs pro.

590 timberwolf: 28" oregon pro bar with C83

For years now, ive run nothing but lucas 2 stroke/32:1 as well @ $9.99 a quart.

Makin money with affordable saws/bars and affordable oil:

I've cut many log truck loads with supertech over the years.
Cheap bar oil is good bar oil...
I would look at that Mystic Product available through O'Reilly that I told you about. I think it's substantially better than Lucas.
